A couple in Melbourne accidentally received 10.5 million Australian dollars (about 6.7 million RMB) when transferring virtual currency on crypto.com. They spent the mistakenly received funds in 2021 and will face a defense trial for theft in October this year.
In May 2021, Thevamanogari Manivel transferred funds to his partner Jatinder Singh's Crypto.com account. However, the exchange detected that the bank account did not match the exchange account, so the exchange issued a refund notice. However, during the refund, instead of returning the 100 Australian dollars the couple attempted to deposit, 10.5 million Australian dollars was mistakenly transferred to Manivel's bank account.
It wasn't until December 2021, during the exchange's annual audit, that this error was discovered. After the exchange filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court of Victoria, the judge ruled that the funds should be returned to the cryptocurrency exchange.
However, it is alleged that the couple had already begun extravagant spending before this error was discovered. Reportedly, the couple purchased four houses, vehicles, and other items, and transferred approximately 4 million Australian dollars to a bank account in Malaysia. One of the properties, a five-bedroom house in Craigieburn, is valued at 1.35 million Australian dollars. The court has ordered it to be sold and the funds returned.
In October 2022, the couple claimed in court that they thought they had won from trading on the cryptocurrency exchange. Singh claimed to have received notifications from the company about a competition. However, Crypto.com's compliance officer Michi Chan Fores denied the existence of such a competition, pointing out that the exchange did not send such notifications to users.
Manivel, who was charged with theft, recently pleaded guilty and admitted to recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime in September 2023. She was sentenced to 18 months of community correction, including 6 months of intensive compliance and unpaid community work, after having been in custody for 209 days. Meanwhile, Singh will face trial on October 23rd.
