[Protests Held Across the U.S. Against Uncontrolled Expansion of AI Data Centers]
Reported by Jinse Finance, on July 20, according to Reuters, protests were held simultaneously at at least 125 locations across the U.S. on Saturday local time, led by the grassroots organization Humans First, opposing the uncontrolled expansion of AI data centers and their infringement on public welfare. The protests focused on the chain of issues caused by the construction of data centers. Despite strong opposition from residents, some local officials have signed confidentiality agreements with developers, approving projects without public oversight, which has led to soaring community electricity bills, misappropriation of water resources, and worsening environmental pollution. According to a Reuters poll last month, only 33% of respondents believe the rapid construction of data centers brings more benefits than drawbacks overall, and only 14% support building them in their own communities. The organization has put forward four core demands: ensuring transparency in the development process, protecting local resources and the environment, allowing communities to share in the benefits of high-paying union jobs and other development dividends, and establishing strict accountability mechanisms to prevent developers from reneging on their promises.
