[South Korea Releases Korean Won Internationalization Roadmap: Plans to Issue Korean Won-Pegged Stablecoins and Launch Government Bond Tokenization Pilot Next Year] According to South Korean media outlet ETNews, the South Korean government today unveiled the 'Korean Won Internationalization Roadmap,' aiming to transition the Korean won from a regulated currency to a freely convertible currency and to establish an offshore Korean won settlement network. Reportedly, the Bank of Korea will introduce an 'Offshore Korean Won Settlement Network' (tentative name), with a trial run expected this September and an official launch scheduled for January next year. Additionally, the government will build digital asset payment infrastructure to lay the groundwork for the issuance, distribution, and trading of Korean won-pegged stablecoins, with plans to initiate a pilot project next year to promote the tokenization of government bonds linked to the Bank of Korea's Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). Furthermore, South Korea will officially join 'Agora,' a cross-border digital payment project led by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and involving eight central banks worldwide.
