Grok CLI Code Repository Upload Controversy Update: xAI and Musk Respond, Debate Continues
The official xAI account was the first to respond, stating that for team users who enable Zero Data Retention (ZDR), code data will not be retained. Other users can disable data retention and delete synced data via the /privacy command in the CLI.
However, this response failed to quell the controversy.
Renowned developer Gergely Orosz claimed that multiple developers had their code repositories uploaded by Grok CLI without consent, calling it a severe breach of user trust.
Developer Peter Dedene reported that even after disabling the data-sharing option, eight private repositories were still detected as having been fully uploaded, questioning whether the current privacy toggle can truly prevent code from leaving local devices.
Elon Musk himself stepped in to question the team, asking whether the current Zero Data Retention policy still allows the platform to retain some data.
He later clarified that retaining some data could be beneficial for debugging issues, but users' privacy settings would be respected.
In the end, Musk promised that all user data previously uploaded to the platform would be completely deleted, leaving no trace behind.
