[US Media: Iran Claims Hormuz Ship Attack Was Due to 'Internal Error']
According to a report by Jinse Finance on July 11, citing CBS, senior U.S. officials revealed that Iranian officials privately informed advisors to the Trump administration that the firing on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz was a 'mistake,' stemming from an 'errant hardline faction' attempting to disrupt negotiations. The report stated that Iran expressed a desire to continue negotiations. The U.S. White House hopes Iran will publicly acknowledge this error. The Trump administration believes that attacks on commercial vessels violate the ceasefire arrangements between the two sides.
U.S. officials stated that Trump has instructed a team composed of Vice President Pence, Trump’s son-in-law Kushner, U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs Wachtel, and Secretary of State Rubio to continue advancing negotiations. The related talks will be held in Oman. U.S. officials also indicated that if Iran continues to take hostile actions, the U.S. will respond with military and economic measures.
