[Polkadot OpenGov Proposes Minimum Self-Stake of 10,000 DOT for Validators]
Polkadot announced on the X platform that OpenGov is voting on a major change to the network's staking architecture. Referendum 1890 proposes requiring validators on Polkadot to lock at least 10,000 DOT as self-stake. This reform is a mandatory prerequisite for the next phase of staking upgrades, which include features such as exempting nominators from slashing and enabling fast unbonding (approximately 24-48 hours instead of 28 days). The rationale is to have validators directly absorb slashing risks through significant self-stake exposure, while nominators can continue earning staking rewards without exposing their principal. If passed, Polkadot staking will eliminate two major barriers to participation, thereby reducing risk for nominators and shortening exit times.
