[Microsoft Takes Over OpenAI's Norway Data Center Lease] According to a report by Jinse Finance, on April 15, Microsoft (MSFT.O) agreed to lease the capacity of a data center in Norway. The project was initially planned for OpenAI's use and was promoted as part of OpenAI's 'Stargate' initiative. Cloud infrastructure provider Nscale stated in a statement that Microsoft will lease 30,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin chips from its campus located within the Arctic Circle in Narvik, Norway. This represents a further expansion on top of Microsoft's prior commitment to invest $6.2 billion at the site. According to informed sources, OpenAI had initially negotiated to use the campus's capacity to run its artificial intelligence workloads but failed to reach an agreement with Nscale. Last week, OpenAI announced it would pause a similar project in the UK due to high energy and regulatory costs in the region. That project was also developed by Nscale. OpenAI's suspension of the UK project and its inability to reach an agreement with Nscale in Norway reflect adjustments to its previously announced large-scale infrastructure plans. An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company is still exploring the possibility of reaching a capacity agreement in Norway and is advancing infrastructure development with multiple partners.
