Abstract: On November 4, 2026, Beijing time, France's mutual credit Akia Group's online banking Fortuneo confirmed it was the victim of a fraudulent cyber attack. The attackers bypassed the bank's remittance risk control, directly transferring funds to external accounts. Chain tracking agencies monitored an outflow of over $133 million in assets, marking a record for recent traditional financial institutions in terms of a single incident of online theft. Unlike the external credential leaks encountered by traditional banks in Japan, Korea, and the Americas, this incident signifies that hackers have directly breached the core withdrawal gates of commercial banks.
Bank Internal Control Gate Breach Triggers Crypto Withdrawals
According to exclusive investigations by crypto journalist Grégory Raymond, the core defenses of Fortuneo experienced a fundamental breach. The fraudsters acquired the authority to initiate external transfers during the attack, enabling them to arbitrarily set the recipients' names, thus circumventing the bank's daily identity verification barriers for recipients.
The attacking group preemptively used false identities to complete identity verification at compliant exchanges like Kraken and Crypto.com. The fraudulent funds were then directly transferred by Fortuneo to the custodian address of the exchange according to the verified account information, indicating that the account system of the trading platform itself was intact, and the breach originated entirely from the internal risk control circulation mechanism of the commercial bank.
Stablecoin Money Laundering Network Settled Through Cross-Chain Mixing
After the fiat currency was credited, it was quickly converted by hackers into on-chain assets. Monitoring data from the on-chain tracking agency Bitquery shows that the first transaction left Crypto.com on November 1 at 12:25 UTC, and high-frequency outflows appeared at the Kraken custodian address 44 minutes later.
On-chain detective ZachXBT tracked and pointed out that the total amount laundered by the attackers was initially estimated at $106 million in stablecoins, later verified and raised to over $133 million. From the night of November 1 to 2, the attackers converted approximately $63 million in USDC and USDT into 27,553 Ethereum through the decentralized exchange Uniswap.
This batch of Ethereum assets was then dispersed and injected into instant exchange platforms and cross-chain channels, with some positions further transferred to Monero for settlement. Industry intelligence analysis suggests that due to some funds potentially moving through offline over-the-counter transactions and traditional acceptance channels, Fortuneo's actual exposure continues to expand.
Global Financial Defense and Offense Present Polarization Patterns
While the core clearing channel of France's online banking faced a direct breach, other global financial institutions are experiencing AI-driven side information warfare. Korean financial regulators disclosed that 16 institutions, including Shinhan Bank and KB Kookmin Bank, have been targeted by ARTEX penetration tool attacks since the end of September, with hackers utilizing Claude and DeepSeek models to capture about 100,000 personal credit files.
Security teams in Latin America have also detected an automated tool named CARLIY 0S in October. The hacker group CyberCartel penetrated over 400 financial endpoints using multiple large models, illegally stealing 4,493 interface keys and login credentials. During the same period, SBI's customer data, comprising 3,897 clients, was leaked on the dark web.
New York's Sawyer Savings Bank and Wyoming's Hilltop Bank both interrupted services in the third quarter due to risks related to third-party software suppliers. However, the core accounts of banks in Japan, Korea, the Americas, and South Asia were not harmed; only France's Fortuneo suffered direct intercepts of substantial funds from fiat and on-chain assets.
French judicial and financial regulatory authorities have intervened to investigate whether Fortuneo fell victim to targeted fraud involving the forging of executive permissions, and on-chain monitoring teams are implementing round-the-clock address tagging for several unknown money laundering route nodes holding Ethereum balances.
