The war of words between Musk and Sam Altman has escalated again, coinciding with the launch of flagship new models from both of their AI companies, making the competition intense.

On July 11, Musk posted on the X platform, accusing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman of "bringing fraud to a new height," targeting OpenAI's business practices towards users and clients.

Altman immediately responded with sarcasm, mocking Musk for selling the concept of a "short-term space data center" to public market investors.

Musk retaliated, stating that Altman not only "stole an open-source AI charity organization" but was also accused of "stealing Apple's mobile technology" amid Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI, and mocked that Altman needs permission from his parole officer to travel.

This exchange occurred in the same week that OpenAI released GPT-5.6 and SpaceXAI released Grok 4.5, with both products directly competing in the AI agent arena, adding market intrigue to this war of words.

Musk fires shots, Altman hits back on space data centers

According to Musk's post on the X platform on July 11, he targeted Altman with straightforward and strong language. Altman reposted and responded:

Bro, you are the one selling short-term space data centers to public market investors.

Musk quickly shot back, claiming these space data centers "will start flying next year," and sarcastically suggested that perhaps Altman could visit if his "parole officer" approves.

Musk further accused Altman of "first stealing an open-source AI charity organization, and then stealing all of Apple's mobile technology," and asked:

What are you planning to do next? It's hard to top this.

The "Apple technology" Musk referred to is directly related to Apple's recent lawsuit against OpenAI.

Wall Street News mentions that Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Friday, accusing OpenAI of deliberately instigating Apple employees to leak information, components, designs, and other materials related to unreleased products to support its own hardware development plans.

Apple is demanding that OpenAI immediately cease related activities, destroy all proprietary materials involved, and redesign upcoming products to ensure they do not contain any Apple technology.

OpenAI responded that it is not interested in other companies' trade secrets and remains focused on creating innovative technology.

This lawsuit will deeply impact the cooperation direction of both companies. OpenAI has long provided key technological support for Apple's Apple Intelligence platform and Siri voice assistant, with their collaboration being officially announced two years ago at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference.

GPT-5.6 vs. Grok 4.5, two flagship models go head-to-head

This week, OpenAI and SpaceXAI respectively released their latest flagship models, facing off directly.

OpenAI launched GPT-5.6, while SpaceXAI released Grok 4.5, both positioned as AI agents capable of autonomously handling multi-step tasks. From a performance standpoint, both products have their respective strengths:

  • GPT-5.6 excels in broad reasoning, business workflows, and cybersecurity;
  • Grok 4.5 is more efficient in autonomous programming and developer workflows, and has a lower usage cost than GPT-5.6.

However, in certain capability dimensions like abstract reasoning, OpenAI's model still leads Grok.

For investors and business users, the differentiated positioning of the two products means that the choice depends on specific usage scenarios. Enterprises seeking comprehensive reasoning capabilities may lean towards GPT-5.6, while developers focusing on cost-effectiveness and code automation may prefer Grok 4.5.
