The Trump Administration has revealed the next steps to curb the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, using its preferred weapon as a deterrent for its continuation. President Donald Trump proposed to countries part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) that they enact tariffs of up to 100% on China to deter Russia from continuing to participate in the conflict.
On Saturday, Trump stated:
I believe that this, plus NATO, as a group, placing 50% to 100% TARIFFS ON CHINA, to be fully withdrawn after the WAR with Russia and Ukraine is ended, will also be of great help in ENDING this deadly, but RIDICULOUS, WAR.
In addition, Trump also reported he was ready to enact “major” sanctions directly on Russia if NATO countries stop buying oil from Russia, in an effort to try to stop Moscow’s economic machinery.
“As you know, NATO’s commitment to WIN has been far less than 100%, and the purchase of Russian Oil, by some, has been shocking! It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia,” Trump assessed, calling out NATO for inadvertently supporting Russia.
Reports have indicated that purchases of oil and oil derivatives from the European Union (EU) to India have increased significantly in the last few months. The Trump Administration has enacted 50% tariffs on India for essentially buying Russian oil and “washing” it to export it as Indian crude to other nations.
China has responded by disavowing Trump’s grip allegations. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that “China does not participate in wars or plot them.” Wang added that “war cannot solve problems, and sanctions only complicate them” in a press conference in Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana.
