A few hours ago, Elon Musk was interviewed live by Jordan Peterson, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto, at the Texas Gigafactory.

During the nearly two-hour interview, the two discussed topics such as the development of AI and human civilization.

At the beginning of the interview, Musk first introduced the recent progress of his company's large model, Grok (developed by xAI).

He stated, "The pursuit of a deep understanding of things is the goal of artificial intelligence development, and Grok is also making efforts in this direction.

But to be honest, xAI has only been established for a little over a year, and there is still a lot of work to catch up with those companies that have been around for five years, ten years, or even longer."

Specifically, Musk admitted that the latest released Grok-1.5 model still lags behind GPT and Gemini. He revealed that Grok-2 completed training about a month ago, using approximately 15,000 H100 GPUs, and is currently undergoing fine-tuning and error correction, with the hope of being released next month with performance close to GPT-4.

In addition, Musk disclosed that Grok-3 is undergoing synchronous training in the Memphis data center and is expected to complete training in 3 to 4 months, followed by fine-tuning and error correction, with the hope of being released before December. Grok-3 may become the most powerful AI large model in the world.

It is reported that the Memphis data center has the world's largest supercomputing cluster, with the assistance of 100,000 liquid-cooled H100s. In terms of computing power, it is approximately 20 times that of the 25,000 A100s used by OpenAI to train GPT-4.

Many people are concerned that AI's technological development will bring unpredictable security risks.

In Musk's view, the ultimate goal of all artificial intelligence companies is to build digital superintelligence, which is an intelligence far superior to humans.

"You can think of this as a wise choice, or you can say it's dangerous, but whether you agree or not, this is indeed happening," Musk said.

He mentioned, "In the face of the potential risks brought by AI, using a line from a movie, we can choose to be a participant or an observer. But the xAI team chose the former in order to have a better chance of guiding AI to develop in a way that benefits humanity."

Musk believes that it is a good thing that more and more players are appearing in the artificial intelligence race, which can create a more open AI world.

He pointed out that it is dangerous to maintain a situation where only Google is leading the way, and Larry Page (co-founder of Google) did not fully realize the security risks of AI.

"It really needs some new artificial intelligence companies to act as a counterbalance to Google, because at that time Google had powerful computing and financial resources. In terms of artificial intelligence, this is a 'unipolar world,' and if it is personally dominated by Larry Page, I think it is irresponsible to humanity, which was also the original intention of participating in the creation of OpenAI."

Regarding why OpenAI is defined as a non-profit organization, Musk stated that typically, companies that do not consider shareholder interests will face the risk of being sued, so he does not want OpenAI to be driven by interests, but rather wants it to be a truly enterprise that solves fundamental AI problems.

At the end of the interview, when discussing the issue of human civilization, Musk once again emphasized his viewpoint.

Musk is a supporter of population growth and supports further expanding the human population, because this means an increase in the number of human brains on Earth, thereby further expanding the scope of consciousness.

Many people believe that the Earth is almost unable to bear the weight of humanity, but Musk has a different view on this. "If calculated using physics and science, the Earth can sustain a population ten times the current one."

"We can find better ways to improve the resources that support human survival. 70% of the Earth is water, and desalination of seawater is already very cheap, so there is actually no water shortage. With improvements in agricultural technology, there is also no shortage of food, and the energy problem is also solvable."

Furthermore, Musk once again emphasized the importance of exploring extraterrestrial planets. He believes that human life should naturally extend to multiple planets, further expanding the scope of consciousness and allowing human civilization to endure for a longer period.
