On June 25th, the Solana Foundation announced the launch of two new features, Solana Actions and Solana Blinks. These new features will allow users to connect and send transactions without leaving the current website they are on.

The Solana Foundation stated that by using Actions and Blinks, any website that can display URLs can utilize these new features. In other words, it only takes a link to embed on-chain activities such as minting and swapping into social media, which also brings to mind the Frames feature on Farcaster.

What are Blinks?

Blinks, short for Blockchain Links, is a collaboration between Dialect and Solana, allowing developers to create "Actions" (previously known as "Solana Pay transactions"). Users only need to convert various Solana interactions (such as voting, donating, minting, swapping, and payments) into operational buttons on platform X through links (URLs), without the need for page redirection, enabling direct interaction on platform X.

Blinks transform Actions into shareable, metadata-rich links, simplifying distribution channels and user operation processes. In addition, Actions and Blinks can be distributed through various formats such as links, QR codes, push notifications, messaging apps, and more.

Practical Application of Blinks

Currently, Phantom, Backpack, DEX Jupiter, and NFT platform Tensor have all supported Blinks.

Phantom shared a real-time example on its official social media, using Blinks to allow users to purchase Bonk using SOL.

First, open the Phantom wallet and go to the settings option.

Select the Experimental Features option.

Choose to enable the Actions feature.

After completion, refresh the browser to interact with Blinks on platform X.

Jupiter also shared a real-time example, using Blinks to allow users to purchase Jupiter tokens using SOL.

Relying on Web2 for Expansion

When discussing "how to promote blockchain to a billion people," Jon Wong, the engineering director of the Solana Foundation, once said, "We must reach users where they are - their favorite apps and websites."

From the release of Solana on mobile to the Blinks relying on traditional social media, Solana has always been accessible to users, attempting to help Web3 break into Web2 through links.

Currently, Blinks are widely regarded as a means for Solana to achieve further mass adoption. Solana co-founder Toly views Blinks as "turning Web2 into a gateway for Solana L2" and states that Blinks will serve as a safeguard for its economic security.

Many compare Blinks to Farcaster's Frames, as both aim to make on-chain interactions more convenient and user-friendly. However, in comparison to Frames, which is rooted in the Warpcaster Dapp, Blinks have a broader social market and a wider audience. Frames is only embedded in a single Dapp, while Blinks are applicable to any application.

Strictly speaking, Blinks do not possess strong social attributes like Farcaster, but rather rely on the existing social coverage of Web2 for application-level interaction and development.

Blinks are more similar to TON, where the latter had social media before the chain.

Similar to how Taobao and Douyin operate, Taobao uses universal links through Douyin channels to acquire customers, while Douyin leverages its user advantage to establish its own Douyin Mall.

TON leverages its mature Telegram to create a natural user and application advantage, integrating Web3 into Web2's social sphere through its built-in TON wallet and various user-friendly Web3 Click Games.

Solana, on the other hand, uses its mature on-chain operations and security as a backing, utilizing Blinks as a gateway and leveraging platforms like X, Ins, Discord, and other Web2 social media with a wider user base to popularize on-chain operations in Web3.

More Ideas: DEX Rebates

While public attention on Blinks has focused on mass adoption and Web2 traffic, some users have begun to focus on DEX referral links.

As mentioned earlier, if Solana is compared to Taobao, Blinks provide referral links for product promotion, and Web2 social media becomes the customer acquisition channel.

The founder of Solana's ecosystem DEX Meteora demonstrated in a recent video the memecoin rebate feature built on top of Blinks. When users conduct memecoin transactions using the links generated through Blinks on Meteora, the creator of the link will receive a portion of the referral rebate.

The core of this rebate feature is built on top of Blinks, something that traditional DEXs were unable to achieve independently.

Traditional DEXs cannot identify the source of users, making it difficult to determine the ownership of rebates. However, Blinks successfully address this issue by allowing users to interact with the blockchain through specific URLs.

In the cryptocurrency world, the spread and dissemination of FOMO are crucial for MEME speculation, and Blinks simultaneously address these two core issues.

If, as the founder of Meteora suggests, the DEX rebate mechanism gains popularity and improvement with the support of Blinks, then Blinks may bring new possibilities and opportunities to the entire Solana crypto ecosystem.
