Sam Williams believes that the fork of Irys is "antisocial".

The perpetual storage protocol Arweave has been embroiled in a fork controversy, with its storage solution Irys (formerly known as Bundlr Network) considering forking Arweave, no longer maintaining the ecological data set, and resetting the token supply. Arweave founder Sam Williams accused Irys of acting out of greed and choosing the aforementioned "antisocial fork".

This week, Irys plans to fork Arweave.
Forking is necessary for the long-term resilience of permanent storage. There are two ways for Arweave to fork, pro-social and anti-social. Unfortunately, Irys seems to be pursuing the latter. Let's discuss this issue today.
tl;dr
- Out of greed, Irys is considering abandoning the data set and resetting the token supply to fork Arweave.
- There is an established mechanism in the network called protocol evolution, which can safely fork and upgrade the network, but Irys seems to be turning a blind eye to this.
- There is a new, 100% free, and 100% compatible bundling program on the website. Simply replace the current Irys node URL to use it, which completely solves the problems for Arweave users.
- Given this situation, the ar.io network has decided to remove the Irys bundling program from the trusted program set of the Arweave main gateway. This will result in significant delays in the availability of user data.
Background
Forking is an important part of blockchain governance. It allows communities to try different approaches to solving problems together.
However, for a permanent storage network, forking needs to be done in the right way, preserving and extending the state rather than destroying it. If forking is done in this way, the network can self-improve over time and work around issues, ensuring the security of the data set. If forking is not done in this way, it means that all data will be regularly cleared, making information permanence impossible.
To facilitate the smooth evolution of the Arweave protocol through forking, our ecosystem has developed a protocol evolution guide. You can read more about it here.
This guide can be seen as a kind of social law for blockchain networks.
Brief Overview of Arweave Protocol Evolution
In short, the rules of the forking system are as follows:
- Anyone can create a fork at any time.
- The fork should inherit the network's data set and token supply.
- The fork can also mint any number of new tokens to compensate its builders.
This system allows forks to compete and improve the protocol in a way that benefits society: ensuring the security of the data set, creating a market for new ideas, and rewarding innovators. It also allows token holders to accumulate a series of tokens across a series of forks in the network, or actively trade these tokens when they believe one fork is more favorable than another. This is a win-win for everyone.
So what is the Irys fork?
We have reliable sources that indicate Irys is considering forking Arweave. Despite the existing framework for Arweave's development, they plan to no longer maintain the data set and reset the token supply.
When asked for the reason, they stated that they do not want to support the existing data and do not want to "give the tokens to a group of **". Apart from greed, it is hard to find any other reason.
Setting aside the defamation of the ecosystem, this short-sighted approach even hinders their own permanent storage project. If the data set and token supply are constantly reset, then no fork can successfully fulfill the long-term storage task.
We still hope that they will eventually establish their fork in the right way. We are ready to communicate with them at any time, and as long as their forking method contributes to the ecosystem, we will also support their experiment.
What to do if Irys users do not want to participate in this farce
Irys can stop uploading your data to Arweave at any time.
Fortunately, switching bundling programs is very simple and can solve problems for our entire ecosystem.
@fwdresearch is currently running a free (100% subsidized) Arweave bundling service. In the foreseeable future, we will continue to provide this service as users migrate. In the long run, both ar.io network and EverVision provide excellent hosting bundling services. Users can also install their own bundling programs.
To switch to the free Arweave bundling service, simply replace the Irys node URL in the code with https://up.arweave.net.
Irys is currently part of the trusted bundling program group, and content from Irys can be displayed on the main portals of the Arweave ecosystem, even if it has not been fully uploaded to the chain. However, since Arweave has lost trust in Irys to "eventually fully upload the data", the data cache of Irys will be disabled on Arweave and related portals maintained by the ar.io network. This will result in a significant delay of approximately 20 minutes to 1 hour before content uploaded through Irys reaches viewable levels.
