Deep Tide Guide: As the shadow of quantum computing draws closer, Wall Street can finally sit still no longer. BlackRock, Fidelity, Coinbase, and other nine institutions are putting real money on the line, betting $15 million on Bitcoin's post-quantum defense over three years. This is not a doomsday warning, but a life-and-death issue that giants holding hundreds of billions in Bitcoin genuinely care about.
A group of leading financial institutions and Bitcoin companies announced today the establishment of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, dedicated to supporting the long-term security and resilience of the Bitcoin network, with members committing to invest a total of $15 million over the next three years.
Founding members include Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and Strategy, covering all aspects of the institutional Bitcoin ecosystem: holders, custodians, exchanges, infrastructure providers, payment processors, and asset management companies, united by a mutual concern for Bitcoin's ongoing security.
The consortium's daily operations will be coordinated by Mike Schmidt, executive director of the nonprofit organization Brink, which specifically funds and supports Bitcoin open-source developers. Schmidt serves in this position as a volunteer.
Commitment of $15 million
The consortium will help fund and support developers and researchers already working on Bitcoin security, including long-term work preparing for a potential quantum computing era. As part of the startup, members have independently committed to invest a total of $15 million over the next three years toward this effort. Each member decides independently how to allocate the funds to their chosen developers, researchers, and organizations.
The consortium will also provide a clear and reliable source of information to investors, the public, and the media regarding these efforts.
"As long-term holders, we are highly motivated to ensure Bitcoin remains secure for generations to come. Funding those engaged in this work and helping to drive the relevant discussions is our natural way to contribute." — CEO of Strategy Phong Le
Support Existing Open Ecosystem
The consortium emulates how industry groups have long supported the open-source software on which they rely, contributing resources and insights without controlling the underlying work.
It does not develop or guide the Bitcoin protocol, does not take a stance on specific protocol changes, and does not speak on behalf of Bitcoin or its developers. The development of Bitcoin is, and will continue to be, the work of a global decentralized contributor community.
"Bitcoin core developers do extremely important work, and we are pleased that our company and other members of the consortium will now provide significant additional funding to support Bitcoin's long-term security needs." — Robert Mitchnick, Global Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock
Quantum Issues
Large-scale quantum computers that could threaten Bitcoin's cryptography do not exist today, and credible estimates suggest that such capabilities are still years away. Nevertheless, preparing post-quantum protections remains a meaningful long-term priority, and the Bitcoin tech community is already actively pursuing this work. The consortium aims to support these efforts and provide reliable reference points for investors, the public, and the media as the field develops.
Looking Ahead
In the coming months, the consortium plans to release and maintain materials regarding Bitcoin security, updating as progress is made, and continues to fund and support the developer community. Bitcoin has proven its extraordinary resilience through the work of an open global community, and the consortium is honored to support this community.
