The most significant event is the Balancer shutdown proposal that will undergo a Snapshot vote from September 25 to 29. If passed, this once top DEX will gradually close, proportionally distributing at least $9 million of treasury assets to holders who destroy BAL. Aave founder Stani Kulechov has previewed Aavenomics 3.0, intending to upgrade the weekly $1 million committee buyback to a fully automatic buyback at the protocol layer, with details to be revealed in the upcoming quarterly call in the next few weeks. The Helicon upgrade for Avalanche will activate on September 22, reducing the minimum lock-up period for validators from 14 days to 48 hours. Binance Wallet has launched a Pre-Access subscription channel through PancakeSwap, allowing users to gain exposure to tokens of unlisted companies. Injective's Meridian mainnet upgrade will land on September 24, focusing on institutional-grade RWA issuance.

BAL: Balancer Shutdown Proposal Vote on September 25, $9 Million Treasury for Token Destroyers

A legacy DEX that once had a TVL exceeding $3 billion is voting on how to handle its funeral.

According to a proposal released on September 14 on the governance forum, Balancer treasury committee member and former Balancer Labs CEO Marcus Hardt proposed an orderly shutdown of the protocol: halting new business development, dissolving the DAO within legal limits, and distributing the treasury assets in kind to holders who destroy BAL. Treasury manager kpk estimated that the current treasury is worth at least $9 million, with about $400,000 reserved for liquidation costs. The previously approved BAL buyback plan will be canceled.

The trigger was the attack incident on November 3, 2025. The attacker exploited a rounding vulnerability in the upscale function, withdrawing over $128 million from v2 stable pools on multiple chains. Balancer Labs has already shut down this March; the protocol relies on a streamlined structure to survive, but revenue has not returned. According to DefiLlama data, monthly protocol earnings have dropped from $1.13 million before the attack to $56,800 in August this year. "The product is made, but it cannot be sold," Hardt wrote on X, admitting that he underestimated the ongoing drag of the attack event on adoption.

If the vote passes, liquidity providers must withdraw by October 30, after which the funds will transition to a withdrawal-only mode; the first redemption window will open at the end of May 2027 for six months, allowing BAL to be burned in exchange for treasury shares. If rejected, the protocol will continue to operate under the current streamlined structure. BAL is currently priced at about $0.11, down 99.85% from its all-time high of $74.92 in May 2021, with a market cap of approximately $7 million, smaller than the treasury.

AAVE: Founder Previews Aavenomics 3.0, Buyback Changes from "Committee Decision" to "Protocol Default"

According to The Defiant, Aave founder Stani Kulechov previewed Aavenomics 3.0 on the X platform on September 18: replacing the current committee buyback with an automated, non-discretionary on-chain mechanism, funded by protocol revenues and GHO stablecoin earnings, to continue running unless governance votes to stop.

The current mechanism is the first phase of Aavenomics approved by governance in early 2025: the Aave Finance Committee buys back $1 million of AAVE weekly on the secondary market, with an annualized amount of about $50 million, with the committee able to adjust or suspend it at any time. The difference in version 3.0 is that the buyback is built into the economic structure of the protocol, eliminating the need for committee approval each cycle.

The background is the Aave Will Win framework approved in April this year: 100% of the income from Aave protocol, GHO, and brand products like Aave App, Aave Pro, Swaps, etc., belongs to the DAO treasury, with Aave Labs only receiving a development budget. Kulechov stated that this income is currently about $134 million per year. According to DefiLlama, the circulating supply of GHO is about $599 million, and Aave's historical cumulative protocol fees exceed $2.2 billion.

Complete specifications and governance timelines will be announced in Aave's next quarterly call, with Kulechov saying "in the next few weeks." After the announcement, AAVE surged from $79 to $98, currently pulling back to around $89, with a weekly gain of about 20%.

AVAX: Helicon Upgrade Activates on September 22,Validator Lock-in Period Reduced from 14 Days to 48 Hours

According to the official Avalanche developer blog, the Helicon mainnet upgrade is scheduled to activate at 11 AM Eastern Time on September 22 (UTC 15:00), and validators must upgrade to AvalancheGo v1.15.0 beforehand, otherwise they will not be able to follow the new chain. This is the first technical milestone after the conclusion of the Avalanche Summit in New York.

The upgrade includes six community proposals, with three of the most impactful to regular holders. One is that the minimum validation period is reduced from 336 hours to 48 hours, combined with automatic renewal staking, enabling validators to stake once and continue to produce blocks, with rewards automatically compounded at a set ratio. The second is that the reward threshold for the new cycle increases from 80% online rate to 90%, with no rewards for failing to meet the threshold, but principal will not be forfeited. The third is that the minimum consumption rate declines linearly from 10% to 7.5% over 90 days, with the official model estimating that the annualized rewards for the minimum period will decrease by about 1.3 percentage points, while the annual inflation rate will drop from 0.5% to 1%.

On a technical level, ACP-194 decouples the consensus and execution of the C-Chain, with blocks accepted by consensus before entering the parallel execution flow, aiming to avoid congestion at the execution level during peak periods. Delegated staking does not benefit from automatic renewal, and each delegation must fit within a single validation cycle.

CAKE: Binance Wallet Partners with PancakeSwap to Launch Pre-Access, Retail Investors Can Subscribe to Tokenized Exposure of Unlisted Companies

According to Binance Wallet's official announcement on September 20, the Pre-Access subscription event is hosted by PancakeSwap, allowing users to participate through self-custodial accounts in Binance Wallet, with subscription limits tied to Binance Alpha points, bStocks on-chain trading volume, and holdings. The first project has not yet been disclosed, and the issuance price, implied valuation, redemption mechanism, and legal structure are still unknown.

The mechanism itself deserves clarification: PancakeSwap provides access to the event, while third-party service providers manage the underlying tokenized exposure, with user assets remaining in self-custody wallets. After the event ends, users will follow the rules to enter redemption or refund processes. This is not buying stock. Binance Research warns that most tokenized pre-IPO tools are contractual claims to shares of private companies, and holders may be creditors, indirect beneficiaries, or derivative holders, not necessarily making it into the company's shareholder register.

The other side of market demand has already heated up. According to Binance Research data, the open interest for perpetual contracts of Anthropic and OpenAI before their IPO exceeded $160 million in September, up from about $1 million in April; while the total market value of tokenized pre-IPO products from Republic and PreStocks is only $41 million. Binance chose to enter from the subscription side, where the company names and token structures disclosed in the first phase will determine whether this track can transition from speculative perpetual contracts into a real equity channel.

INJ: Meridian Mainnet Upgrade Landing on September 24, Targeting Compliant RWA Issuance

According to Injective's governance page, if the Meridian upgrade receives a positive vote, the chain will pause on September 24 at approximately 15:00 UTC at block height 184,394,000, and will resume after upgrading to v1.20.4.

The upgrade includes three main aspects: realization of regulated tokens, supporting compliant issuance of tokenized real-world assets; unifying the RWA perpetual market to enable trading of these assets in a single order flow; and also launching private RFQ (request for quote) testing to onboard institutional participants for on-chain pricing, laying the groundwork for the subsequent privacy platform CypherOS. INJ will serve as the settlement asset for these activities, and the pause window for the chain before and after the upgrade is a period to avoid for short-term traders.

Other Catalyst Briefs

BP: Backpack Previews "The Most Important Product Release of the Year." Kyle Samani stated that Backpack is about to release the most important product this year. He just joined the Backpack US board on September 2, having made the largest personal angel investment in July. Backpack already launched four perpetual contracts for stocks on September 1 and has realized a shared margin pool for real U.S. stocks and crypto derivatives. Samani's exact words were, "It will reshape the nature of on-chain and off-chain transactions," but specific product forms have not been disclosed.
