Deep Tide Introduction: Trump Media reported a net loss of 238 million dollars in the second quarter, of which 190.4 million dollars was unrealized losses on digital assets and stock securities. The company announced the implementation of a "more disciplined management framework" for its crypto treasury, but in July, it went against the trend by increasing its holdings of nearly 4,700 Bitcoin. A company with revenue of only 1.7 million dollars that now holds nearly 900 million dollars worth of Bitcoin, its story has become largely unrelated to the media business.

On August 10, Eastern Time, Truth Social's parent company Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ: DJT) released its financial report for the second quarter of 2026: a net loss of 238.1 million dollars, compared to a loss of only 20 million dollars in the same period last year; adjusted EBITDA loss of 223.5 million dollars. The day after the financial report was released, Cointelegraph reported that the company would "reconstruct its digital asset treasury strategy."

Revenue of 1.7 million dollars, net loss of 238 million:

First, let's lay out the most striking comparison in the financial report: second quarter revenue of 1.7 million dollars, net loss of 238.1 million dollars, with the loss amount being 140 times the revenue.

However, breaking down the loss structure reveals that the part that actually burned cash is far less alarming than the headline suggests. The company explained in its report that "the vast majority of the losses are non-cash losses": unrealized losses of 190.4 million dollars on digital assets, staked digital assets, and equity securities, appreciation interest of 11.7 million dollars, and equity incentive expenses of 8.1 million dollars. The actual cash consumed by operating activities was 13.7 million dollars, of which 25.6 million dollars in legal expenses was still covered by financial asset pools due to legacy litigation costs.

In other words, the essence of this 238 million dollar loss is: the Bitcoin price correction in the second quarter directly pierced through the profit and loss statement according to market value accounting rules. The company's cumulative net loss for the first half of the year has reached 644 million dollars.

Increasing holdings after losses

The market's first reaction is "with such a loss, does it mean cutting losses?", but the holding data gives a contrary answer.

As of June 30, the company held 9,477.16 Bitcoin, slightly down by 65 from the 9,542.16 Bitcoin at the end of the previous quarter. However, in July, the company sold Bitcoin-related securities worth 159.6 million dollars and converted all proceeds into spot Bitcoin. By July 31, holdings rose to about 14,139 Bitcoin (including staked portions), valued at approximately 890.5 million dollars at that time.

A company with total assets of 2 billion dollars, of which about 1.9 billion dollars are financial assets, has nearly 900 million dollars in Bitcoin. Trump Media's asset structure has become deeply tied to Bitcoin.

Highly financialized treasury operations: staking, options, lending

Behind the holding figures is a set of operations far more complex than "holding coins and waiting for appreciation." The 10-Q document shows that the company is already using options strategies to manage Bitcoin volatility and earn premium income, while also deploying some Bitcoin through lending and other arrangements to third parties for returns. As of the end of the second quarter, 2,077.34 Bitcoin were staked for options strategies, and 4,260.73 Bitcoin were locked as collateral for convertible bonds.

Risks are also highlighted in the financial report. The company warns that some trading counterparts "may not have ratings from mainstream credit rating agencies," and if the market declines or counterparties go bankrupt, Bitcoin without collateral arrangements may not be recoverable; deployed Bitcoin also cannot be freely sold or re-staked.

The so-called strategy reconstruction: cooling the treasury, redirecting resources back to the media business

The official statement on strategic adjustments is quite restrained. The financial report states that the company will implement "a more disciplined management framework for digital asset treasury," aiming to "manage volatility while maintaining long-term strategic exposure and improving balance sheet productivity." The company also stated that it would direct more resources to core media businesses such as Truth Social and Truth+.

Interim CEO Kevin McGurn stated in the financial report: "In recent months, we have clarified our strategic direction, bringing true discipline to capital allocation. We are making steady progress towards a merger with TAE Technologies, while better directing resources to the core pillars of the media business, and this effort has already yielded results."

The results he mentioned include: Truth+ has entered full commercial use, Truth Social is in the content expansion phase, and the data licensing product Truth API launched on August 1 has signed over 10 customer agreements, beginning to generate revenue. The company also stated that legacy legal matters have been largely resolved, and legal expenses that previously comprised a large portion of management costs are expected to decline significantly.

Future highlights: Q4 merger with nuclear fusion company TAE, crypto exposure remains a pricing anchor for stock

The three most noteworthy items to track in this financial report are:

First, the merger with nuclear fusion energy company TAE Technologies is expected to be completed in Q4 2026. McGurn referred to it as "the most important driver of long-term shareholder value." If realized, Trump Media will transform into a peculiar combination of "social media + Bitcoin treasury + nuclear fusion energy."

Second, the specific actions for "disciplining" the treasury. The increase in holdings in July indicates that the company has no intention of retreating; the so-called restructuring is more likely to entail scaling back on derivatives like lending and options rather than reducing Bitcoin holdings. The size of staking and lending revealed in the next 10-Q disclosure will be a key observation point.

Third, whether revenue can grow. Quarterly revenue of 1.7 million dollars cannot support any valuation narrative. The data licensing business of Truth API is the company's first new source of income not reliant on advertising, and its signing growth rate will determine whether "returning to the core business" is just empty rhetoric.

For the crypto market, the real signal from this financial report is that the public company's crypto treasury model has faced its first stress test in a volatile market, and Trump Media's response is to withstand unrealized losses, continue to increase holdings, and reduce leverage.
