Stripe plans to acquire OpenRouter. Is the focus of future payment landscapes also on AI?

Stripe is turning every step of the AI Agent into its own business with a stablecoin settlement layer.

On July 24, The Wall Street Journal reported that payment giant Stripe is in discussions to acquire AI model intermediary OpenRouter, with an announcement of the deal possibly coming soon, although the negotiations could still break down or be interrupted by other buyers. According to insiders, the acquisition values OpenRouter at around $10 billion, a significant jump from its post-investment valuation of $1.3 billion after completing a $113 million Series B funding round in May this year. The investors behind OpenRouter include a16z, Menlo Ventures, and CapitalG, a subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet.

On the surface, this transaction appears to be a pure AI infrastructure acquisition, but Stripe's identity is no longer just that of a credit card acquirer. Over the past year and a half, it has invested $1.1 billion to acquire stablecoin company Bridge and has incubated its own stablecoin settlement public chain, Tempo, making it one of the world's most aggressive participants in stablecoin infrastructure.

Before this, several large tech companies had approached OpenRouter for potential acquisition. Stripe has had business dealings with OpenRouter for some time: OpenRouter has long used Stripe Invoicing, Stripe Tax, and Radar for its global billing and risk control, and this rumored acquisition can be seen as a form of vertically integrating its own customer.

Payment, Wallet, Ordering, Settlement, Stripe hasn't missed any

In February 2025, Stripe completed the acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge for $1.1 billion, marking its largest acquisition to date and solving the issue of stablecoin inflow and outflow.

Four months later, Stripe acquired embedded wallet infrastructure provider Privy, which serves over 75 million accounts, addressing the wallet and identity issues.

At the end of September that year, Stripe and OpenAI jointly launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), introducing Instant Checkout within ChatGPT, allowing AI Agents to make purchases without accessing users' real payment credentials through a new payment primitive called "Shared Payment Token," solving the problem of how AI Agents place orders.

In March 2026, Stripe went live with the public chain Tempo developed in partnership with Paradigm, simultaneously releasing the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). Since then, AI Agents can autonomously complete small, high-frequency payments using USDC on Tempo, with controlled authorization scopes such as limits and merchant whitelists, eliminating the need for manual approval of each transaction and addressing the issue of how AI Agents pay.

At the end of June, Stripe joined over 140 companies, including Visa, Mastercard, BlackRock, and Coinbase, in the newly formed stablecoin alliance Open USD. This alliance, operated by the independent company Open Standard, is led by Bridge co-founder Zach Abrams.

Individually, each step is merely an "expansion of stablecoin business"; however, when viewed collectively, Stripe has integrated various aspects required for an AI Agent to complete a transaction—ordering, payment, settlement—into its business scope.

OpenRouter Complements AI Model Services and Billing

OpenRouter does not produce models; it serves as a layer for "model routing": aggregating over 60 providers and more than 300 models, helping developers compare prices, switch models, and automatically downgrade to backup models in case of a model failure, taking about 5% of each invocation as commission.

Its founder, Alex Atallah, is the co-founder and former CTO of the NFT trading platform OpenSea. According to data disclosed by OpenRouter, its annualized revenue reached $50 million in March 2026, a significant increase from $19 million at the end of 2025, with over 1.5 million active developers and handling billions of inference requests.

Tempo and MPP solve the question of "how can AI Agents pay", ACP addresses "how can AI Agents order", while OpenRouter fills in "which model should AI Agents call, and how should it be billed".

When all three layers are combined, it means that an AI Agent's task—from model selection, calling inference, to the final commercial settlement—can theoretically pass through Stripe's pipeline. This corroborates the positioning stated by its crypto business leader as "the AWS of the currency world".

This ambition is not unique to Stripe. Circle launched Agent Stack for AI Agents in May, which includes Agent Wallets and micropayment tool Nanopayments; Google released the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).

According to data from agenteconomy.to, the x402 protocol, led by Coinbase and deployed on chains such as Base and Solana, has processed over 190 million on-chain transactions as of July 23. Providing payment infrastructure for AI Agents is becoming a common judgment among several giants.

However, the reality is stark. A report released by crypto trading and research firm Keyrock in May showed that between May 2025 and April 2026, the total payment volume settled on-chain by AI Agents was approximately $73 million. Meanwhile, stablecoin settlement volume was as high as $46 trillion for the year, with the former accounting for less than one ten-thousandth of the latter. Current valuations are more based on narratives and early positioning than on actual scaled performance.

Stripe Wants More Than Just Intermediary Business

Financial analysis site FourWeekMBA, based on publicly disclosed token usage data from OpenRouter, indicates that the token share of American models on the OpenRouter platform has dropped from about 70% in June 2025 to around 30% in June 2026, while Chinese open-source models like DeepSeek are becoming the main forces in usage.

The deal is far from finalized. The Wall Street Journal reported that negotiations could still break down or be interrupted by other buyers. Stripe is also simultaneously competing with private equity firm Advent International to acquire PayPal, having its resources and capital tied up.

But regardless of whether this deal ultimately goes through, Stripe's path over the past 18 months has become clear. It is no longer content to be a cash register in the AI era; it aims to become the default infrastructure provider for the connection between AI and users.

For the blockchain industry, the price of this acquisition may not be the most important factor. What really deserves attention is whether stablecoins can, through the AI Agent economy, find the first scalable inter-machine payment scenario, thereby validating the correlation and collaborative value between AI and blockchain.
