PANews May 4 news, a spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry responded to the United States' accusations of its funding of cryptocurrency theft through the Korean Central News Agency, calling it “absurd slander” and a “political tool” aimed at fostering the United States' “hostile policy.” The spokesperson also stated that North Korea will never tolerate any acts against its national interests.

According to data from blockchain intelligence company TRM Labs, since 2017, the total amount of cryptocurrency theft associated with North Korea has exceeded $6 billion, and its share of global hacking losses has risen from less than 10% in 2020 to 64% in 2025. In the first four months of 2026 alone, North Korean-related hackers have been accused of stealing approximately $577 million, accounting for 76% of global cryptocurrency hacking losses. Among these, the incidents involving KelpDAO ($292 million) and Drift Protocol ($285 million) in April contributed the major portions.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) had previously sanctioned six individuals and two entities related to North Korea's IT worker program on March 13, accusing them of raising nearly $800 million through cryptocurrency transactions to support North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
