PANews April 20 news, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated at the 2026 Hong Kong Web3 Carnival that the two core functions of the Ethereum protocol are: as a public bulletin board (applications can publish messages, and everyone can verify the published content and order), and as shared digital objects (assets controlled by code, ERC-20 tokens, NFTs, ENS domain names, DAO organizational control, etc.). He emphasized that the value of decentralized applications lies in ensuring autonomous security, verifiability, fair participation, and user aggregation.
Buterin pointed out that the roadmap for the next four years includes short-term scaling (increasing gas limit, parallelization, gas repricing), launching CKEVM to support more complex computations, early preparation for post-quantum cryptography (signature algorithms based on hashes and lattices, which, although less efficient, have existed for 20 years), account abstraction (EIP-8141) to support smart contract wallets and anti-quantum signatures. The long-term goal is to maximize secure consensus (able to withstand 49% node failures), formal verification (using AI to generate proofs), extreme simplicity, and quantum safety. Final determinism will be achieved within 1-3 slots (about 10-20 seconds), and zkVM will allow devices such as smartphones to also verify the chain, aiming for scalable expansion by 2028. Buterin emphasized that Ethereum is not trying to compete with high-frequency trading platforms in speed, but rather to become the most secure and most decentralized chain.
