An independent Bitcoin miner won a jackpot on Friday, earning 3.146 BTC, worth approximately $266,000, by solving block 924569 with only a tiny fraction of the hash power typically required to win block rewards.
It is believed that this miner used amateur-level machines, mining this block with a hash rate of about 1.2 terahashes (TH/s), which is just a drop in the ocean in an industry dominated by industrial-scale operations producing exahashes (billions of billions of hashes per second).
Con Kolivas, founder of CKpool, announced this victory on X, congratulating the "extremely lucky" miner and pointing out how incredible this event is. He estimated that, based on the hash rate reported by the miner, the probability of this happening is about one in 1.2 million per day.
According to on-chain data, the miner received 3.125 BTC from the block subsidy, plus 0.021 BTC in transaction fees, totaling slightly over 3.146 BTC.
Despite the industrialization of the mining landscape, 2025 is still an impressive year for independent miners. According to Mempool Space data, 13 independently mined blocks have been discovered through CKpool this year, averaging just over one per month.
Last month, an independent Bitcoin miner received a reward of $347,455 after independently solving block 920440, earning 3.125 BTC plus fees entirely on their own.
Earlier this July, another miner with only 2.3 petahashes of hash power received the full block reward, with similar victories recorded in June, March, and February.
Major mining companies are seeking new revenue sources beyond Bitcoin mining, especially after the recent halving tightened their profit margins.
CleanSpark has begun shifting towards AI-focused data center infrastructure, a move that saw its stock price rise by 13% after announcing expansion in October.
TeraWulf also plans to raise $500 million through convertible notes to help fund the construction of a new data center campus in Abilene, Texas.
