Another internet giant is set to launch a stablecoin.

On September 25, American internet infrastructure giant Cloudflare announced plans to launch the NET Dollar, a USD-backed stablecoin (NET is Cloudflare's NYSE ticker symbol).

Who is Cloudflare

According to public information, Cloudflare is a multinational technology company based in the United States that provides content delivery network (CDN), cybersecurity, DNS services, and other internet infrastructure services. It accelerates access, enhances performance, and strengthens security for millions of websites and applications through its global edge network, helping to defend against cyberattacks and enabling customers to build a safer internet.

Almost every internet service relies on Cloudflare; for example, when you log into a website and are asked to verify that you are human before proceeding, that service is mostly provided by Cloudflare.

According to Cloudflare, the NET Dollar is a new USD-backed stablecoin that will provide instant and secure transaction support for the agentic web. The NET Dollar will help create a new business model on the internet that rewards originality, maintains creativity, and empowers innovation in an AI-driven world.

NET Dollar Targets AI Agents

Cloudflare states that AI is fundamentally changing the way humans interact with the web. Humans are no longer in direct control of every interaction but are beginning to delegate tasks to autonomous AI agents, such as booking flights, ordering groceries, managing calendars, and more. To achieve this, the underlying financial system also needs to evolve. An AI-driven internet requires instant, global, and secure currency so that AI agents, developers, and creators can transact instantly, automatically, and reliably.

Since its inception, Cloudflare has been a global company dedicated to helping customers worldwide enhance performance, protect website and network security, and develop and deploy applications. Today, Cloudflare aims to achieve this goal through transactions, providing a fast, secure, and globally accessible internet-native payment system. Stablecoins are one of many tools that, alongside existing financial systems, can help the AI-driven internet thrive, bringing speed, trust, and interoperability.

Cloudflare co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince stated, "For decades, the business model of the internet has primarily relied on advertising platforms and bank transfers. The next business model of the internet will be driven by pay-per-use, partial payments, and microtransactions—these tools will shift the incentive mechanisms toward truly valuable original creative content. By leveraging our global network, we will help modernize financial channels to enable the transfer of funds at internet speed, creating a more open and valuable internet for everyone."

Key Features and Use Cases of NET Dollar

NET Dollar will have five key features:

• Agentic Commerce: NET Dollar is built for the rise of agents and machines, enabling seamless automated transactions without human intervention.
• Real-time Settlement: The rise of autonomous agents and interconnected devices is creating a new economic paradigm. These systems require a reliable medium of exchange capable of handling high-frequency automated transactions without human intervention.
• Programmable: Rules, triggers, and workflows can be directly embedded into payments, making them smarter and more adaptable.
• Global and Interoperable: NET Dollar will operate across networks and ecosystems, enabling frictionless global trade.
• 1:1 USD Backing: Each token will be fully collateralized by USD, ensuring transparency, reliability, and price stability.

Use Cases for Agent Payments with NET Dollar:

• Simplifying payments anywhere in the world: The systems needed by agents must not only be fast and secure but also trustworthy, with transparent records, reliably executing payments globally—across currencies, regions, and time zones.
• Enabling instant automated transactions: Individual agents will be able to execute instant, programmatic actions, such as paying for the cheapest flight or ordering immediately when a product is listed. Business agents can pay suppliers upon confirmation of delivery based on instructions.
• Unlocking new business models on the internet: NET Dollar will enable creators to be rewarded for unique and original content, developers to easily monetize APIs and applications, and AI companies to give back to the ecosystems that support them by fairly compensating content sources.

Cloudflare also stated that it will contribute to open standards such as the agent payment protocol and x402 to simplify the process of sending and receiving payments over the internet.
