According to reports, one of the world's leading chip design companies, Nvidia, has announced an investment of $683 million in a UK AI infrastructure company that was spun off from a cryptocurrency miner in 2024.
According to a report by Bloomberg on Wednesday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that the investment in Nscale (the AI division of cryptocurrency mining company Arkon Energy) will become an important part of efforts to develop AI infrastructure in the UK. Nscale was spun off from Arkon in May 2024, aiming to provide AI cloud services for the European region.
This investment comes as the UK government is vigorously promoting the development of its own AI infrastructure. Nvidia announced that it will collaborate with Nscale to expand the UK's GPU capacity to 60,000, which will be integrated into multiple data centers of Nscale by 2026.
"Sovereign AI infrastructure is key to national resilience, economic growth, and strategic autonomy," noted Nscale CEO Josh Payne when discussing the UK expansion plans. "This milestone progress deepens our commitment to providing critical AI infrastructure for the next industrial revolution."
In January of this year, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the government plans to adopt a proposal containing 50 recommendations "to seize the opportunities presented by AI." At that time, Nscale, Vantage Data Centers, and Kyndryl jointly committed to invest approximately $17 billion to support this initiative.
California-based Nvidia surpassed all major tech giants in July, reaching a market capitalization of $4 trillion. Some analysts believe that the surge in stock prices behind this milestone is primarily due to investors' strong confidence in the development prospects of AI technology.
This achievement has pushed Nvidia's valuation slightly above the total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies, hovering around $4 trillion since July.
