The Civic Democratic Party led by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala successfully withstood the fourth government overthrow crisis in three years—this crisis stemmed from a challenge initiated by the opposition parties regarding a scandal involving $45 million in Bitcoin.
At the heart of this scandal is the 1 billion Czech koruna ($45 million) Bitcoin (BTC) donation made to the Ministry of Justice by Tomáš Jiřikovský on May 27. This individual had previously been convicted of drug trafficking, weapons violations, and embezzlement.
According to a report by the Czech News Agency on Monday, the no-confidence motion proposed by the Czech opposition parties ANO, SPD, and the Pirate Party received only 94 votes in support, falling short of the 101 votes needed for passage by 7 votes. The vote took place after more than 24 hours of intense debate in parliament.
No-confidence votes are typically raised when individuals or opposition parties believe the current leadership is unable to effectively govern the country.
Although Fiala's party successfully held its ground in this no-confidence vote, the controversy has further heightened public concerns about government officials' involvement in potentially conflicting cryptocurrency-related activities.
Recent similar controversies include U.S. President Trump's profits from his vast cryptocurrency business and Argentine President Javier Milei's involvement in the Libra token scandal.
Fiala pointed out that the $45 million Bitcoin donation could have been avoided and admitted that this incident has severely shaken public trust in his party.
In a statement reported by the Czech News Agency, Fiala stated that the Civic Democratic Party would "take responsibility for moral misconduct."
However, in a post released on the X platform on Wednesday, he accused the opposition of using the debate to "throw dirt, insults, and lies" at his party.
"We have just had another vote of no confidence in the government. It went as expected, and the government withstood the vote. The opposition used the meeting as always—to throw dirt, to insult, and to lie. From Andrej Babiš, we also learned that he actually doesn't want any information and is not interested in any audit. The other three no-confidence votes against the Civic Democratic Party occurred between September 2022 and October 2023, involving issues such as the energy crisis, inflation, and espionage.
This incident led to the resignation of former Justice Minister Pavel Blažek on May 30, while Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura also faced pressure to resign due to allegations that he had known about the donation for some time.
On June 10, Czech President Petr Pavel held an oath-taking ceremony for the new Justice Minister, Eva Dekroijx, who promised to initiate an independent investigation into the department's related actions.
She subsequently stated that under her leadership, the Ministry of Justice would "fully cooperate during the investigation of the donation case."
Jiřikovský made a significant donation to the Ministry of Justice—about one-third of the assets in his cryptocurrency wallet, which amounts to 1,561 Bitcoins. This donation was formally authorized by a court ruling, which also returned his previously seized electronic devices.
However, Jiřikovský, who was sentenced in 2017 and released in 2021, had previously controlled an additional 3,855.15 Bitcoins associated with the illegal site Nucleus Market.
Technical expert Jiří Berger was present to witness Jiřikovský opening the wallet containing 1,561 Bitcoins. Berger noted that since the additional 3,855.15 Bitcoins are stored on older technological devices, they currently cannot access this larger amount of cryptocurrency.
