Clearly, many people underestimate the long-term technological innovation impact behind the transition from EVM to RISC-V @VitalikButerin. In my view, Ethereum may soon usher in a new technological narrative-driven cycle of "changing lanes and overtaking":
1) The transition from EVM to RISC-V is not a tactical iteration for Ethereum, but a strategic upgrade, perhaps the next revolutionary technological narrative journey following the Layer2 scaling solutions. Just like the shift from PoW to PoS back in the day, which seemed merely a change in consensus mechanism, it was actually a fundamental reshaping of the network's foundation.
The technological stack upgrade centered around the transition from EVM to RISC-V is the key to unlocking the next decade of growth for Ethereum; it is not about controversy, but about survival. E-guardians, perhaps the performance of $ETH in this cycle is underwhelming, but do not forget the developer community that has accumulated on Ethereum. Once the technological narrative returns, Ethereum's comeback journey in the latter half of this cycle is still worth looking forward to;
2) In fact, the fate of EOF (Ethereum Object Format) is a typical example. This technical proposal has gone through countless tug-of-war and technical struggles, and it may ultimately face abolition? Simply put, EOF optimizes at the software level of EVM, while RISC-V systematically overhauls at the hardware level. Since RISC-V has been chosen, there is naturally no need to continue with EOF?
This indicates that Ethereum is rethinking its path to innovation breakthroughs. The Layer2 scaling solutions that have persisted throughout a cycle may become a glorious and great history. In the face of increasing competition from high-performance Layer1 chains, Ethereum has no choice but to seek a true reconstruction of its underlying framework, and replacing the outdated and cumbersome EVM virtual machine is a brand new beginning. From the perspective of technological evolution, Ethereum is shifting from "external expansion" to "core innovation," which is the inevitable result of a strategic reversal;
3) ZK (Zero-Knowledge Proof) was once the most brilliant technological narrative on Ethereum, but so far, the technical value of ZK has only been superficially realized, mainly used for state proofs between Layer2 and Layer1, merely scratching the surface of ZK's potential.
If RISC-V truly steps onto the historical stage, a new wave of infra upgrades around the technological narrative on Ethereum may just be beginning. Think about the previous competition surrounding Layer2 scaling solutions like Plasma, Rollup, Parallel, Validium, and so on. The diversification of technical solutions itself is also a crucial step in promoting ecological prosperity. It can be anticipated that solutions around ZK related to privacy, scalability, etc., are likely to become the theme of a new round of competition, such as the collision of RISC-V with zkMIPS, the integration and iteration of zkEVM and zkVM, parallel EVM, hardware acceleration, and more;
4) RISC-V, as a hardware instruction set intervening in the originally software-level technological upgrade, is destined to be a more thorough overhaul. It may transform Ethereum from a "block development" approach of continuously stacking new patches on the outdated old EVM system into a more flexible ecological combination expansion thinking based on a brand new modular mindset.
This change can be seen as the beginning of a second spring for Ethereum's technological narrative. Rather than widening the expansion on a dilapidated old road, it is better to open up a brand new highway, transitioning from "monolithic architecture + external expansion" to "modular architecture + core enhancement";
In conclusion, I want to reiterate that Ethereum's transition to RISC-V is not a simple technological iteration. As the L2 track becomes increasingly crowded and the narrative dividends gradually diminish, Ethereum's technical team realizes that only by returning to L1's original innovation can they break the deadlock of "Layer2 ecological landing not meeting expectations" and reshape Ethereum's strategic competitive barriers.
Of course, I know many people no longer believe in "technological narratives," and even some idealistic developers I once greatly admired have become frustrated and retreated. So, there will definitely be those who think this is yet another start of an infra innovation that rolls out the concept of "technological narrative," without any application ecology landing? Indeed, even so, why not embrace it? It is certainly better than the current stagnant situation.
