Yes, the Twitter account with the username MakerDAO is now in my hands. I want to tell you what happened from a first-person perspective and share some miscellaneous feelings:

What happened

In order to bring first-hand information to the readers of Foresight News, FN members are always paying attention to various sources of information. I am the same —— so I learned "Maker has rebranded" for the first time.

First-hand information is often "incomplete". In order to provide readers with complete and effective information, FN members will explore in depth. I am the same —— What exactly has Maker been rebranded as? Clicking on their official Twitter, everything is the same; refreshing it, the nickname changed to Sky, but the username remained unchanged.

Like our users, FN members are all quick-witted and able to infer and distill actionable insights from information. I am the same —— The nickname has changed, so the username should be changed too. So I went to change the username now, maybe I can get this special username?

Smoothly, surprisingly smoothly. Soon I was in front of the screen, staring at the changed username and my slender fingers, lost in thought —— Am I really a genius?

This speed, no wonder Foresight's news is so fast.

What could have happened

After coming to my senses, I suddenly felt a wave of fear.

This has to be considered Sky's mistake —— if it weren't for me, this could have turned into a disaster. If it had fallen into the hands of North Korean hackers, or anyone with malicious intent: change the profile picture and nickname to Maker, Sky, claim to be conducting "the largest airdrop in crypto history" and attach a phishing link; or create a fake dog coin, impersonating the official Maker to release a token contract …… With Maker's influence, this could have potentially led to many users being defrauded of substantial assets.

Moreover, I only need to sell this account to get a huge return, and I don't even need to take responsibility. "I don't know what the person who buys my account will do."

Fortunately, FN members are all honest and selfless, not swayed by ill-gotten gains.

A little reflection

Why did all this happen? Setting aside Sky's execution error, this actually reflects the common problem of centralized social identity.

In this decentralized industry of crypto, too much communication happens on the centralized platform X (Twitter). And we don't have "decentralized identities".

This means that regardless of technical or other reasons, the loss of centralized identity can bring potential huge losses to projects and users.

For the industry to progress, we need to make changes.

Solution to the incident

Blockchain detective ZachXBT said that a client with phishing tools offered a six-figure sum in USD for this username. To be honest, after seeing this price, I regretted being too upright, why not take the money and run away (laughs).

But in order to protect the industry, users, and my own conscience, I still adhered to my bottom line. (I gave up so much money, can't I praise myself a little?)

In the end, I only used the @MakerDAO account to post some self-entertaining content, and did not do anything for my own benefit.

And because I love the company so much, I voluntarily brought in a wave of traffic for FN (boss, if you see this, just give me a raise, no need to negotiate with me). This also led Maker (Sky) to contact us through the company.

As for this account, I am inclined to keep it for myself. On the one hand, because I am also a crypto practitioner and DeFi enthusiast, this special username also has collectible value; on the other hand, this account can also bring more traffic. Traffic is still very important for media workers.

If I can keep this account, FN and I will use it to discuss beneficial topics such as DeFi, decentralization, DID, etc., to achieve a win-win situation as much as possible; however, Sky's team contacted me and expressed their desire to regain control of the account, but they don't seem to be in a hurry.

The incident is still being communicated and handled, and that's the current situation.
