BitVM Version 2 Introduces New Era for Bitcoin L2 Scaling Solutions

The original BitVM, introduced by Robin Linus in October 2023, aimed to allow Bitcoin to support Turing-complete contracts without altering its consensus rules. However, it faced limitations, particularly in its applicability, confined to two-party interactions and requiring substantial off-chain computation.

On Thursday, Linus and several co-authors introduced BitVM2 which builds on these concepts by enhancing programmability and reducing onchain transaction complexity, thereby broadening its potential use cases and improving operational efficiency. Essentially, BitVM2 employs optimistic computation and SNARK verification to ensure the correctness of programs with minimal onchain transactions.

According to the white paper, the new model allows for permissionless challenging, where any Bitcoin full node can dispute a transaction, significantly increasing the protocol’s security. The design reduces the number of onchain transactions from BitVM1’s 70 to just three, making it a more practical and efficient solution for complex Bitcoin-based applications.

One of BitVM2’s key contributions is the BitVMBridge, a protocol that bridges BTC to Bitcoin layer two (L2) systems. This bridge improves over existing designs by reducing trust assumptions and requiring only one active rational operator to maintain security. With these advancements, the white paper’s authors believe BitVM2 not only addresses the scalability challenges of Bitcoin but also paves the way for more secure and decentralized cross-chain applications.
