An Airbnb host, Ashley, shared her experience on Tiktok about guests who accumulated a $1,500 electricity bill by setting up an electric vehicle station and mining cryptocurrency during their three-week stay. Despite leaving the property in excellent condition, the guests’ excessive energy use, captured on external security cameras showing them bringing in 10 computers, prompted Ashley to enforce a new rule against cryptocurrency mining and electric vehicle charging. This incident led to a prolonged struggle with Airbnb to recover the extra charges, although the guests admitted their activities, revealing they had profited over $100,000 from crypto mining. Other Airbnb hosts echoed Ashley’s sentiments, with many having to implement similar prohibitions.
