01 Gamer Sun Yuchen, Invited Me to Dinner at His Place
This year on May 1st, my friend M invited me to play in Singapore. One night, after drinking at Sentosa, I habitually opened Vision Pro (referred to as avp) at the hotel. I found a player with the nickname Justin Sun in a certain app, and entered the voice chat but couldn't hear the other party's voice. I left my WeChat ID in a message, and shortly received a friend request, surprisingly from that Sun Yuchen (referred to as Brother Sun).
After exchanging pleasantries, he shared a multi-person FaceTime link and chatted for over 2 hours with two other players. Everyone was very excited, and I expressed some optimistic estimates about avp, to which he also posted on his Moments saying that Vision Pro, like the iPhone, Bitcoin, and Tesla, had all experienced a "wow moment".
Learning that he was also in Singapore, I asked if he wanted to grab a coffee together, and he readily agreed. The next day, Brother Sun invited me directly to his place for dinner.
"Come to my place, we have all the power and network, and it's convenient for discussions."
"Okay, I have a friend coming with me."
"avp players are like family, you guys come over."
Wow, this guy who auctioned off a lunch for $4.5 million in 2019 and then stood up Buffett, and in early 2024 stood up a certain tech media journalist and was labeled a bad guy, with various rumors online, seems like a Chinese Gatsby with a billion-dollar net worth, directly inviting me to dinner at his place?
02 Tech Enthusiast Sun Yuchen, Discussing AI and Space Computing
The next evening at 7 o'clock, we went to Brother Sun's place as planned. It was a very large villa, with a high atrium in the living room, a long staircase, and ivory-like sculptures. We were all very hungry, and the housekeeper prepared a sumptuous meal and chilled beer. While eating and drinking, we chatted about Vision Pro and technology. I wasn't familiar with the web3 circle, and had only seen his TikTok before, but it turns out he's just as talkative in real life as he is on TikTok.
We talked about Nvidia, AI, space travel, and the dinner he had with Buffett in 2020, where he gave the old man his first smartphone, a Samsung Tron joint edition, only to have Cook fly to Omaha a few days later and force the old man to switch to an iPhone 😂
He received several calls in the middle of our conversation, and replied to foreigners, "I’m in a meeting now, we could change to tomorrow same time, thank you." Then continued chatting
He FaceTimed with friends Kara and Jeremy, and really liked the real experience of Spatial Persona, and wanted to give each executive a Vision Pro
He excitedly showed us his Xiaomi robot dog. He's very eager for the progress of robots, but also afraid of them ruling the world. He signed up for space travel but has no time to exercise. I noticed that the power bank he was using was very old, so I recommended Anker and Flashjolt to him, and he quickly made a note in his phone's memo
He's a great talker, with a loud voice that fills the whole room. He originally wanted to end the conversation around 9 o'clock after staying up late the night before, but when I asked him a few questions, he kept talking until after 11 o'clock, like a little boy standing at the door not wanting his guests to leave, so cute…
He's about 1.8 meters tall, with good skin, and has the image of a slightly hunched IT guy. Even as he was seeing us off, he was still happily chatting. It's hard to tell if the person in front of me is a tech enthusiast or a billionaire, or maybe a real estate agent selling new properties??
Afterward, Brother Sun joined the avp player group, and also writes app reviews, often asking questions in the group. Late at night, he would ask how to download 8k VR movies. He's no different from every otaku I know!
03 Entrepreneur Sun Yuchen, Discussing Buffett and Duan Yongping
The most shocking thing of the evening was that the big shot who has enormous wealth and is building order in the blockchain world, shared information and jokes with us ordinary tech enthusiasts and practitioners, almost the same.
It turns out the world is really flat, and everyone uses GPT, iPhone, TikTok, and Google the same way. What's the essential difference?
Thinking back to what Zhang Yiming said in a previous interview, cognition is the most important competitive advantage. It's not about information, but the ability to understand and abstract the laws behind the information. Thinking back, Brother Sun, a tech otaku, what did he say besides the jokes?
Talking about Buffett, "arbitrage". Using low-interest money from insurance companies to buy stocks with high returns, such as Apple and oil companies. Buffett himself said he's old and not smart, so he only buys companies that he understands.
Talking about Duan Yongping, "copy Apple, make money to buy Apple". Thinking back to two weeks before going to Singapore, a friend from a certain phone company told me that they had been studying avp since the 23 WWDC, and the company had been studying XR for a few years, waiting for Apple to release a consumer-level product before releasing a cheaper but similarly performing product. It matches Brother Sun's theory!
When I asked why he bought Ethereum, news reports said he lost a lot of money. He interrupted me, saying, "Don't be influenced by the noise, most of the information is worthless." "Because Ethereum is very powerful, so we study Ethereum, make money, and buy Ethereum," learning from Duan Yongping.
Haha, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication!
Diligence, effort, advanced cognition, enthusiasm for new technology, and the ability to abstract the essence from a massive amount of information, perhaps these are the things that ordinary people should learn from Brother Sun, beyond the media reports and rumors.

04 Interview Before the Launch in the Domestic Market
On June 28th, Vision Pro was launched in the domestic market, and we early players and believers hope to do some CX and evangelism. I arranged an interview with Brother Sun, and he readily agreed. The following content is from a temporary online interview on the night of June 26.
AI and Space Computing
Q: How long do you use Vision Pro every day?
Sun Yuchen: When I first got it, I wore it almost every day, chatting with friends on FT, and installing all kinds of apps. Now I use it for at least 2 to 3 hours every day, after finishing work in the morning and meetings at noon, I immediately go to experience new apps whenever there's one.
Q: Why are you so obsessed with experiencing apps, like Zhang Xiaolong under the pen name of He Caitou, out of curiosity or for other reasons?
Sun Yuchen: It's driven by curiosity, and I currently have no plans to do anything in the XR field, I'm still studying and researching. I bought two iPhones very early, and one of them is specifically for experiencing various apps. At that time in the United States, I should have been one of the top few hundred users of Uber globally, and at that time, the cars driven by Uber drivers were all luxury cars, and it wasn't for making money, so I experienced the charm of early communities. In fact, the early Bitcoin community, and our current Vision Pro community are very similar.
Q: Was your deep experience with the iPhone purely out of interest?
Sun Yuchen: Yes, I started my mobile internet entrepreneurship relatively late, and in 2014-2015, I made my first app, a voice live streaming app. The company was quite successful, with a net profit of three to four million a year, and the later very popular social app copied mine. Because I did a lot of work in blockchain, I closed the app at that time.
Q: So you're a heavy digital enthusiast, did you use VR devices before?
Sun Yuchen: I started paying attention to VR around 2013, and I've bought Google Glass, Baofeng Mojing, Google Cardboard, Quest, Valve Index, and more. After Facebook acquired Oculus, I went to experience it, and I've played popular games like Beat Saber and Half Life on the Quest. So, I've always been following this field.
Q: How do you evaluate Apple's product?
Sun Yuchen: Apple always enters the market as a reaper after careful consideration. So when I heard that Apple was going to make a head-mounted display, I felt that this industry was finally going to take off.
One important thing Apple did right was the ultra-high resolution. Just like Zhang Yiming's preference for "great power comes great responsibility," many short video platforms failed before, including Musical.ly, Meipai, and Weishi in China. Only Douyin, TikTok, and the earlier Jinri Toutiao succeeded because of the "great power comes great responsibility" in their algorithms. Many VR companies didn't grasp the main contradiction, and without the resolution, everything else is useless.
We often say that if one thing isn't done well, it's not just that thing that's a problem, it will lead to countless other problems. You have to "great power comes great responsibility," solve one problem to solve countless others. So, Apple solved the resolution problem, and the issues with wearing and lack of content will be easily solved.
Q: Vision Pro is expensive, who do you recommend to buy it?
Sun Yuchen: I recommend everyone to buy it!
When I was young, my family wasn't very wealthy. My parents' combined salary was less than 2,000, and when I was five or six, they spent 10,000 to buy me my first PC. That computer became my best friend, and I bought all kinds of games at the computer market, even without Chinese, I looked up words in the dictionary. It was like entering the tech field very early, and later I worked in this industry.
So sometimes we shouldn't think about what something is used for, but what kind of world it brings you into, what kind of friends you make, and what kind of circle you enter. Vision Pro and space computing are the future of humanity, and I think you should see the future earlier than others.
If you have children, you must buy one for them.
Q: Any advice for developers and observing teams?
Sun Yuchen: There are several directions that avp will definitely succeed in.
Immersive video shooting. After immersive movie events and live broadcasts became popular, traditional flat movies quickly lost their meaning, and avp is completely dominant. For example, I find watching F1 live very boring, but the experience with a head-mounted display is much better. There are also immersive live broadcasts of football matches, but there's currently too little content.
Games, like "I'm surrounded by beautiful women," if made immersive, will definitely be a killer app, and will drive sales with short, fast-paced content.
Social, Spatial Persona currently only supports 5 people, but if it can support 20 people at the same time, then all the executives in my company should have avp. There are many companies like ours that have globally distributed offices.
From a developer's perspective, you have to get on board early. Once the price drops a lot, there won't be much profit, so you have to get in early. In the future, the price, weight, and wearing comfort will all be optimized.
Q: How long do you think it will be before humanity enters the era of space computing, and what will happen in 5 and 10 years?
Sun Yuchen: I think I'm quite easily brainwashed, and now I'm a 100% believer in space computing, believing that space computing is the future of humanity. I'll persuade my friends, and if wearing it is uncomfortable, it's your problem, not Apple's problem. (laughs)
And speaking of it, I feel a bit conflicted. It's like when I first joined the Bitcoin community, my work was to get more people in touch with Bitcoin, but sometimes I hope that Bitcoin can remain niche. So every time Bitcoin skyrocketed when it was only a few dollars, I felt very sad, because after the surge, more people would come in, and then everyone would know. To make an inappropriate analogy, it's a bit like the feeling of my high school crush being Fan Bingbing, and then soon everyone in the country paid attention to her. (laughs)
I feel the same way about Vision Pro now.
Q: Let's talk about more futuristic topics. Are you afraid of the singularity approaching and robots rebelling? What is the probability and timing of these events?
Sun Yuchen: I think it's about to happen soon, and humanity might be extinct within 20 years. I've talked about this on TikTok. Nvidia controls computing power, and other companies are laying out nuclear fusion. When humanity enters an energy shortage, AI will be an endless energy-devouring monster, and there won't be enough lithium and electricity. Someone suggested controlling AI training and was immediately fired by humans themselves. Humanity is running towards extinction on this path, and can't stop the car.
Evaluating Others
Q: Who do you admire the most among the living, and why?
Sun Yuchen: Elon Musk, it's a bit cliché now. Around 2011, when I had just arrived in the United States and was doing my master's at UPenn, Elon came to give a speech as an alumnus, promoting Tesla and attracting graduates to his company. At that time, I felt that Musk would change humanity.
Apart from the often repeated first principles, let me tell you about his mindset. Most people find new things troublesome and don't want to use them, but Musk's mindset is that if the technology is so amazing, you should adapt to it. When Tesla's electric sports car Roadster was launched, a classmate asked how to charge it and use it normally outside, and Musk said that electric cars are the future of humanity, and everyone should think about how to build more charging stations, including everyone, to adapt to and achieve it.
Q: Do you believe in Musk's Mars colonization plan?
Sun Yuchen: Of course, I believe. Not only do I believe, I also want to sign up to be one of the first people to go to Mars. I also bought a ticket for Blue Origin's spacecraft, and I plan to go to space in the next two years.
An employee asked me if I admire Musk so much, is there anything he's better at. I said I'm weaker than him in everything, but I'm better than him in one thing, so I feel like I'm better than him in everything. That is, I'm 20 years younger than him, and Musk can't achieve his dreams, but I can, like going to Mars to colonize, haha.
Q: Who do you admire the most in history?
Sun Yuchen: I really like the losers in competition, like Tesla vs. Edison, Leibniz vs. Newton, and the figures at the end of dynasties in Chinese history, like the late Ming and Yuan dynasties.
Studying the losers is to avoid becoming a loser and to make you think more about the logic of the world's operation. This is also what Jack Ma taught us at Hupan University, to pay more attention to the losers, so you can also understand the secrets of success.
Q: I don't understand blockchain very well. Are the losers like Tron compared to Ethereum?
Sun Yuchen: Haha, maybe in five years, we'll be even better, and the final verdict hasn't been reached yet. 😂
Enterprise and Personal
Q: You don't seem to have a strong desire for material things, and your home in Singapore also looks very simple. So, are you working so hard to pursue wealth, social value, or fame? I'm really curious.
Sun Yuchen: My motivation is to see more of the future. My daily life is divided into two parts. One is the field where my company is located, not only to see the future but also to build and achieve more of the future. Many things that others haven't done, I have to do now, because everyone is counting on me to do it. It's like we all count on Zhang Xiaolong to make the avp version of WeChat every day. On the other hand, I want to see the future created by others, like avp and robots.
I've recently had a thought, that physics hopes for a grand unified theory to unify strong and weak forces. Religion has the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. So, is it possible that AI, space computing, and blockchain will converge quickly in the future? Blockchain is the currency of machines, and robots naturally understand it, and decentralization is something no one can control. Everything is the best arrangement.
(The author's statement, this part is not well understood and not agreed with. It also deviates from the original conversation.)
Q: What luxury have you spent money on? Will changes in wealth change your spending habits?
Sun Yuchen: My spending habits have basically not changed. Now it's just computers, phones, and Vision Pro. The money I earn is like the points on the big screen in "Ready Player One," and those points themselves have no use, so everyone still uses the same set of equipment.
(The author's complaint, it's too Versailles, if you have the ability, give me some points 😒)
Q: How does your company embrace the new technological revolution, such as AI and space computing?
Sun Yuchen: Maybe next year's year-end bonus, I'll give employees some avp, you have to keep up with the times. Then I'm also thinking about many scenarios that can quickly increase our productivity. I don't rule out doing something inside it in the future. I'm currently just a user, thinking about keeping up with the latest information every day.
Q: Any advice for other avp players, many of whom are your fans? How can ordinary people invest in time and wealth?
Sun Yuchen: First, spread the word about our group, the information density is very high, and there are many people in it who are really doing things. The early days of the coin circle also had some groups like this, but as the industry grew, everyone became enemies, and then the groups died. The current state is the best, everyone doesn't have a sense of hierarchy, and everyone is doing very interesting things and is very willing to share with each other.
(The author: Yes, in the future, we need to bring in more interesting developers)
I hope the Android space computing ecosystem will rise as soon as possible, and it should be more lively.
(The author: Yes, the MR Dream Play released yesterday is very strong)
Regarding investment, everyone has their own areas of expertise, and it's crucial to maintain curiosity about at least one or two things outside your main industry. Investment must be in your area of interest, for example, avp players buying Apple is no problem, and knowledge and action are one.
