Sui's new consensus protocol, Mysticeti, developed by Sui, reduces consensus time delay to 390 milliseconds and is expected to launch on the mainnet this summer.
Sui is an innovative Layer 1 blockchain that provides industry-leading performance and unlimited horizontal scalability. Today, it announced on its official Twitter account that its latest consensus protocol, Mysticeti, has been successfully deployed to the testnet. This significant breakthrough has reduced the consensus time on Sui's testnet by 80% to 390 milliseconds, while maintaining the protocol's industry-leading throughput. This impressive demonstration proves that Sui has the fastest consensus layer in the industry.
Mysticeti is developed based on in-depth research on the Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus mechanism. It represents a significant improvement over the Narwhal-Bullshark consensus algorithm introduced when Sui's mainnet launched a year ago, achieving unprecedented transaction speeds and reducing the CPU requirements for validating nodes. This improvement extends Sui's outstanding low-latency performance to all transaction types on the network.
Sui's unique object-oriented architecture allows the network to process transactions in different ways based on the characteristics of the transactions and related objects. On Sui, transactions involving "exclusive objects" (such as peer-to-peer transfers) do not require consensus and follow a fast path, allowing them to be completed in a shorter time. Transactions involving the same shared objects (e.g., involving market, auction, or cooperative game assets) require consensus. In the past, this meant more processing delay, but now Mysticeti has changed this by using an optimized version of the BFT consensus to process shared object transactions. Mysticeti is designed to minimize communication between validating nodes and fully utilize network bandwidth to maintain high throughput.
"Mysticeti is not only a major leap for Sui, but also a significant advancement for blockchain technology as a whole," said George Danezis, the founder of Sui Network and a global pioneer in BFT consensus research, as well as the co-founder and chief scientist of Mysten Labs. "It reduces consensus delay to what we believe is the minimum while retaining the advantages of high capacity and low computational cost. It also allows for transaction processing faster than consensus within the same protocol, a unique feature of Sui. Mysticeti is an example of Sui once again pushing the limits of blockchain technology."
The results of Mysticeti on the testnet are significant, with an 80% reduction in transaction submission delay compared to Narwhal. Mysticeti's enhancements significantly reduce complexity and optimize resource usage, enabling the Sui network to process tens of thousands of transactions per second with a delay of less than one second.
These advancements are crucial for Sui as it continues to solidify its leading position in blockchain speed and scalability, providing a seamless experience for large-scale developers and users.
"The launch of Mysticeti is the result of successful collaboration between research, engineering, and our validating node community," said Dmitri Perelman, engineering lead at Mysten Labs. "The experience we gained from building and fine-tuning the previous generation of consensus production provided background and inspiration for researchers to propose new protocols. After the first Mysticeti prototype demonstrated undeniable performance advantages, the engineering team fully supported the implementation of the new generation of consensus, which will be rolled out to the mainnet with the support of validating nodes in the coming months."
Kevin Nelson, co-founder of Aftermath Finance, said, "Mysten has proven that a DAG-based structure can surpass the most advanced performance in consensus throughput and latency. We are excited about the launch of Mysticeti on the testnet and look forward to its impact on users when it is released on the mainnet. Additionally, we look forward to leveraging Mysticeti's new design to provide a better end-to-end experience on Aftermath."
Greg Siourounis, head of the Sui Foundation, added, "Low latency and fast transaction speed have always been the fundamental value of Sui as the preferred platform for developers, and now Mysticeti improves the developer experience. This breakthrough once again demonstrates our continuous and unwavering focus on innovation, opening up new possibilities for the type and quality of decentralized applications built on Sui."
The key innovations of Mysticeti are detailed in the newly released paper, "Mysticeti: Low-Latency DAG Consensus with Fast-Path Commit," which demonstrates the scalability of this new technology and is available for review.
