Ethereum developers at the latest bi-weekly developer meeting have tentatively set January 17, 2024 as the first test network deployment date for the upcoming "Dencun" upgrade.

The "Dencun" upgrade was originally scheduled for the last quarter of 2023, but due to engineering complexity, it has been postponed to 2024.

Tim Beiko, the protocol support lead at the Ethereum Foundation, pointed out that this date is not set in stone, and if there are major issues, the date may change. The team's goal is to release a detailed blog post about the fork in the week of January 8, 2024, providing stakeholders with a week to prepare for the update.

1. Dencun Upgrade Schedule

The meeting outlined a draft schedule for the Dencun upgrade testing phase.

Following the Goerli testnet on January 17, 2024, developers plan to run tests on other networks.

Testing will be conducted on Sepolia on January 31, 2024, and on Holesky on February 7, 2024.

If all goes well, the developers aim to deploy these changes on the mainnet by the end of February 2024. However, these dates may change based on the results of the testnet forks.

Dencun will be the first major upgrade for Ethereum since the "Shapella" earlier this year, marking an important milestone that allows for the extraction of staked Ether (ETH) from the blockchain.

Additionally, a key aspect of the Dencun upgrade is the implementation of "proto-danksharding." This new process aims to enhance Ethereum's data storage capacity, which is expected to reduce the cost of layer 2 aggregation and expand the blockchain by increasing the space for "block" data.

By improving data processing capacity and efficiency, it aims to enhance the performance of aggregation, thereby increasing the overall throughput and resilience of the Ethereum network.

2. "Layer 3 Application Chains"

In addition to the Dencun upgrade, the meeting also emphasized the collaboration between Avail and StarkWare. This partnership aims to enhance the data availability of application chains within the Starknet layer 2 network. Utilizing the customizable sequencer Madara, the plan is to develop application chains as a layer 3 solution within the Starknet ecosystem.

These layer 3 application chains, supported by the joint efforts of Avail and StarkWare, aim to fundamentally change data availability patterns, including validium and sovereign Rollup. In turn, this will help optimize transaction processing efficiency and finality, which is crucial for blockchain scalability.

Developers also discussed Ethereum's role in decentralized finance (DeFi) and the broader context of blockchain technology. They reiterated their commitment to maintaining Ethereum's position as a leader in this field, emphasizing the need for continuous innovation and adaptation to meet the evolving market demands.

The meeting also provided a platform for developers to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Ethereum. From addressing network congestion issues to enhancing user experience, developers explored a range of topics crucial to Ethereum's roadmap and user needs.
