The unborn ApeChain has attracted the attention of both Optimism and Arbitrum.

On December 8th, Nina Rong, the Ecosystem Development Director of the Arbitrum Foundation, proposed "ApeChain's Development Using Arbitrum Technology, Led by Horizen Labs" in the ApeCoin DAO community. Currently, the proposal is still in the preliminary discussion stage, but it is worth noting that the proposal has been marked as "High Importance" by Messari.

$APE as Gas? Proposal for Arbitrum Receives Support from ApeCoin DAO Community

It is reported that the members who proposed this proposal include Nina Rong, Ecosystem Development Director of the Arbitrum Foundation, Robert Viglione, Co-founder and CEO of Horizen Labs, Hervé Larren, Senior Advisor at Horizen Labs, Steven Goldfeder, Co-founder and CEO of Offchain Labs, and A.J. Warner, Chief Strategy Officer of Offchain Labs. In other words, this proposal is led by Arbitrum, with the participation of Horizen Labs and the Arbitrum development team Offchain Labs.

The proposal states that Arbitrum "is motivated to build ApeChain as an Arbitrum Orbit chain using AnyTrust technology." Of particular note, the proposal believes that ApeChain will become an extension of the ApeCoin DAO community after its launch and will quickly become the cornerstone of the Ape brand: "This also means that ApeChain should use $APE as the native Gas token."

The proposal also points out that if ApeCoin DAO uses Arbitrum technology to develop ApeChain, the advantages it can obtain include: the ability for ApeCoin DAO to choose to add transaction (tx) collateral to generate income for the DAO; low fees; achieving customizability; and achieving self-executing governance.

In the comments section of the proposal, Nina Rong also mentioned, "If Arbitrum technology is adopted, the Arbitrum Foundation is very willing to provide funding." Some members of the ApeCoin DAO community expressed support for the proposal, while also considering using $APE as Gas to be a wise and reasonable choice.

Who is Horizen Labs?

Among the proposers of this proposal, Horizen Labs is worth paying attention to. Horizen Labs was established in 2019 and is mainly responsible for creating the ApeCoin DAO staking system. Prior to this, Horizen Labs helped the ApeCoin DAO community launch several major initiatives, including ApeCoin, Otherside, and ApeStake within the Ape ecosystem.

In addition, as a technology service provider supporting the Horizen DAO, Horizen Labs has established governance for the EVM-driven platform Horizen EON, further demonstrating its expertise in creating new ecosystem systems.

Therefore, the proposal indicates that Horizen Labs is also committed to becoming a long-term holder and supporter of ApeCoin: "Horizen Labs will use its deep industry experience to provide advice and guidance to ApeCoin DAO and the community on the initial development of the ApeChain ecosystem."

Specifically, the support provided by Horizen Labs will include: launching cross-chain $APE using the OFT (Omnichain Fungible Token) standard on the LayerZero protocol, providing technical support; establishing connections between multiple foundations and other DAOs to continuously expand the ecosystem; and providing technical support for projects issuing tokens on ApeChain.

Arbitrum and Optimism Competing for ApeChain?

Before Nina Rong led the proposal and suggested ApeChain to use Arbitrum technology, Lumberg, a founding member of MetaCartel Ventures, also initiated a proposal on November 22 on the ApeCoin DAO website, expressing the hope to deploy ApeChain on Optimism.

The proposal aims for ApeChain to be part of the Optimism superchain ecosystem and plans to become a core contributor to the Optimism Foundation, also stating that "Optimism has committed to supporting ApeChain with up to 20 million OP tokens based on milestone achievements."

At the same time, the proposal also mentioned that the costs associated with the deployment, management, and operation of ApeChain can be handled by launching ApeChain (AC) tokens or by requesting grants from ApeCoin in other ways. If the DAO chooses to launch ApeChain tokens, the ApeChain team will be responsible for raising funds to support all operations, and the AC tokens will be distributed as governance tokens to ApeCoin stakers.

Currently, ApeChain, which has not yet been born, is being sought after by both Arbitrum and Optimism, reflecting to some extent the attention both parties are paying to the potential of ApeChain.
