Sentient Foundation officially announced its establishment on February 10. This is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) remains open-source, decentralized, and aligned with human interests.
With the ongoing acceleration of the AGI race, the foundation has emerged at a critical turning point in AI development. At this turning point, the decisions we make today will directly determine whether this transformative technology serves all of humanity or becomes a power chip in the hands of a few.
Core Challenge: AGI Must Not Be Monopolized by a Few Companies
Today, some of the most powerful foundational models (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude) are owned and controlled by private companies. This should not be the case. This technology, which is likely to define the future of humanity, must not be locked within corporate walls and subject to shareholder interests rather than societal welfare.
However, we still have reason to be optimistic. Models like DeepSeek and Qwen have already demonstrated that open-source AI can match or even exceed closed-source solutions. The question now is no longer whether open-source AI can compete, but whether we can build the necessary infrastructure, community, and support systems to ensure it achieves ultimate victory.
This is precisely the purpose of the Sentient Foundation: to empower researchers, developers, and organizations that contribute to true open-source AI, enabling everyone to utilize and participate in the development of open-source AGI.
“Just as Linux has become the cornerstone of an open Internet, we believe that open-source AGI will also become the cornerstone of human progress,” said Sachi Kamiya, Director of Venture Capital and Growth at the Sentient Foundation. “Our mission is to ensure that AGI is never controlled by a single entity and that its development remains transparent, equitable, and aligned with human values.”
Guardians of Open AGI
The Sentient Foundation will operate as a neutral and transparent guardian of the open AGI ecosystem, with responsibilities covering research, governance, and global promotion:
Advocating Value Alignment and Safety: Establish relevant standards to ensure AGI development aligns with human values and is subject to appropriate oversight.
Global Research Collaboration: Attract top AI researchers, academic institutions, thought leaders, and government agencies as ambassadors and advisors.
Developer Support: Provide financial assistance and support to the global open-source developer community.
Governance Framework: Coordinate and establish an inclusive governance structure for the responsible development of AGI.
Public Advocacy: Actively promote open-source AGI as the right path to beneficial AI through public forums such as“Open AGI Summit” and others.
Drawing on Successful Historical Experiences
The foundation draws inspiration from the most successful open-source movements in the history of technology. Linux drives the vast majority of servers globally; Apache supports most web services; Android has democratized mobile computing. The Sentient Foundation believes that, given the stakes, AGI must not only adopt this open model but do so urgently.
Collaborative Relationship with Sentient Labs
The Sentient Foundation works alongsideSentient Labs, a technology research and product organization at the forefront of applied AI research. Sentient Labs serves as an innovation engine—conducting research on reasoning, value alignment, and multi-agent coordination, and constructing frameworks such as ROMA and open-source models like Dobby; while the foundation is responsible for ensuring that this work always serves the broader goal of achieving “open, aligned AGI.”
