The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is operating and still maintains its original purpose of identifying sources of spending inefficiency.
The institution, originally co-led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, said it is still active and rebuked reports that it had disbanded. In a social‑media post, the department called the Reuters article “fake news.”
Furthermore, it highlighted that “President Trump was given a mandate by the American people to modernize the federal government and reduce waste, fraud, and abuse.”
DOGE’s latest action netted savings of $335 million, terminating 78 wasteful contracts linked to social media monitoring and broadcast operations, among others.
The report, published last Sunday, cites statements from Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor, who allegedly acknowledged that the department was disbanded and that it was not a centralized entity anymore.
Nonetheless, Kupar refuted these allegations, explaining that Reuters “spliced” his comments to create a grabbing headline.”
The termination of DOGE before the end of its tenure would mean a pivot from the Trump Administration away from the mission of battling useless spending, one of the main objectives of the institution.
Even if the report manipulates Kupar’s statements, DOGE has faced increased criticism, as it has failed to attain the savings numbers that Musk announced once, aiming to slash up to $2 trillion from the government budget.

According to its own calculations, DOGE has helped the federal government save $214 billion.
While the future of DOGE is uncertain, it does not seem capable of fulfilling its original promise of saving up to $2 trillion for the U.S. people, as the Trump Administration shifted its attention to other matters.
