Ethereum (ETH) L2 Starknet's mainnet has experienced another interruption within two months.

The Ethereum scaling solution Starknet has once again experienced a mainnet outage, raising concerns among investors about the reliability of blockchain networks.

Starknet layer-2 (L2) blockchain suffered an outage on Tuesday, affecting the mainnet for a total of two hours and 44 minutes, leading to slow block generation and halted network transactions.

The outage was caused by the network's sequencer, which in blockchain terminology acts like a traffic controller for on-chain transactions, responsible for arranging the transactions to be included in specific blocks.

According to status.starknet.io, during the outage on Tuesday, the Starknet sequencer was unable to recognize "Cairo0 code."

This marks the second "major disruption" on the mainnet within two months. According to data from L2beat.com, Starknet is the seventh largest L2 network on Ethereum (ETH), with a total locked value (TVL) of $548 million, and this incident has raised concerns about Starknet's reliability.

Previously, on July 18, the Starknet mainnet was affected for only 13 minutes due to slow block generation and gateway delays.

L2 networks are secondary blockchains built on top of the Ethereum (ETH) mainnet, processing transactions off-chain to enhance transaction speed and capacity.

Starknet employs ZK-rollup (specifically STARK proofs) technology to provide high throughput and low-cost scaling transaction capabilities for the Ethereum (ETH) mainnet.

Less than three hours after the interruption, the Starknet team had restored all functionalities. An X (formerly Twitter) account operated by Starknet community members announced on Tuesday:

The announcement stated, "To restore service, transactions submitted from 2:23 to 4:36 UTC were not processed." It also noted that starting from block 1960612, the blockchain underwent a reorganization, "involving one hour of activity."

This means that all transactions from that block onward need to be resubmitted by users. The announcement added that the team will release a "complete timeline" that includes the root cause and long-term preventive measures.

Cointelegraph has contacted Starknet for more details regarding this network interruption.
