[This Year, Foreign Investors Sold 176 Trillion KRW Worth of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix Shares]
Odaily Planet Daily News: A brokerage research report indicates that foreign investors have been consistently selling off South Korean stocks, with no signs of easing in the sell-off trend. However, a series of events from the end of this month to mid-November may serve as a turning point for foreign capital inflows. Key variables that could potentially reverse market sentiment include the earnings reports of two major memory chip giants, the U.S. midterm elections, changes in the Middle East situation, and the IPO of AI company Anthropic.
According to data from the Korea Exchange on the 14th, as of the previous trading day, foreign investors have cumulatively net sold 203.6977 trillion KRW (approximately $141.5 billion) in the main board market of the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) this year. Among this, net sales of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix alone amounted to approximately 176 trillion KRW, accounting for 86% of the total foreign sell-off.
The foreign ownership ratio of Samsung Electronics has dropped to its lowest level in 18 years since 2008, while SK Hynix's foreign ownership rate has also fallen below its ten-year average. This wave of foreign capital withdrawal has been the primary driver behind the decline in the KOSPI index.
Factors such as escalating geopolitical risks in the Middle East, controversies surrounding OpenAI's annual revenue, and concerns over the rising competitiveness of foreign enterprises have collectively suppressed the market.
