This map illustrates how much land would theoretically be needed to generate enough solar power to meet the electricity demands of Germany, Europe, and the entire world.
Based on research by Nadine May, this map estimates the amount of land that would theoretically be required if solar panels alone supplied the electricity needs of Germany, Europe, and the entire world. Although the highlighted areas appear relatively small on a global map, they are idealized calculations based on solar irradiance, panel efficiency, and electricity demand—not proposed locations for solar farms.
The visualization challenges the assumption that a lack of land is the primary barrier to large-scale solar power. In practice, the greater challenges include energy storage, transmission infrastructure, weather variability, environmental considerations, and the cost of constructing and maintaining extensive renewable energy systems. Land availability is only one part of a much larger equation.(Historic Vids)
