How do you view this US Iran memorandum? I believe that many people who have read the text of the memorandum of truce between the United States and Iraq are surprised by the huge concessions made by Trump, and even the degree of this concession has exceeded my expectations (although in April and May, it has been said that the United States and Iraq have a high probability of reaching an agreement, and both sides will make concessions). From any perspective, it is difficult to describe it as beautiful, and even some American media have mentioned the term 'humiliation'. But personally, I quite agree with this approach, as discussed by SpaceX on Tuesday about the wisdom of 'stop loss'. Why do you say that?
1. An undeniable reality is that ending the brutality of this war as soon as possible is actually the right stop loss, allowing Washington to withdraw relatively low-cost from this disastrous war. Although the cost is not small, in reality, the cost paid by the United States is not significant:
The $300 billion reconstruction plan should only be organized under the leadership of the United States;
The lifting of economic sanctions also freezes funds that originally belonged to Iran;
2. In history, few governments have been able to resist the temptation to increase their bets and turn them back after experiencing significant setbacks, leading to deeper suffering. In mid March, I also talked about it this way: going berserk and increasing pressure to stimulate talks. In May, many influential politicians in the United States suggested either fighting to the end. But we must also face the reality that even if a large-scale ground force is deployed, it is difficult to completely suppress Iran and control the Strait of Hormuz. On the contrary, it will further plunge the United States into a quagmire.
So this' stop loss' actually prevented the United States from falling into a quagmire similar to the Vietnam War and the Soviet Afghan War. The quagmire war is not a necessary path for the decline of a powerful country, but it often serves as an amplifier for excessive expansion, strategic judgment failure, and a decrease in domestic resilience.
3. In the short term, it has avoided the escalation and deterioration of the situation, soaring oil prices, and uncontrolled inflation;
Trump has to return to domestic affairs by taking a break from its focus and devote itself to the mid-term elections. The easing of inflation is also conducive to the election;
In the medium to long term, preventing oneself from falling into a quagmire war where the focus cannot be seen, and avoiding excessive consumption of strategic resources, because this is essentially the consumption of national strength.
Of course, we should also acknowledge that the US Iran memorandum was actually a major geopolitical setback for the United States, and it can even be said to be the biggest geopolitical setback of World War II. The impact of this setback should be far-reaching.
But the most important thing is that Trump should be able to ensure that the American AI era continues to maintain a substantial leading position, and not be distracted or waste resources on other issues. If this priority is mistaken, it will be the real disaster for the United States.
