I wasn't too fond of Musk (@ elonmusk) before, until yesterday when I listened to a podcast where he was interviewed. He mentioned the Kardashev scale, which states that the essence of human civilization evolution is the improvement of energy control capabilities. At present, no one is more ambitious than him in building a business narrative. At present, humans are still in the Type 0 stage, and in terms of energy utilization, it is almost negligible: Type 0: We are currently mostly here, barely able to utilize some energy on Earth, with little overall control over civilization's energy. Type I: Can effectively control the energy of the entire planet (atmosphere, ocean, geothermal, etc.). Type II: Control the energy of the entire stellar system (such as the Dyson sphere/ring, utilizing the full output of the Sun). Type III: Control the energy of the entire galaxy. From his description, it feels like what he wants is far more than just commercial competition. What he wants is to enable humans to control more energy and move towards higher levels of civilization, such as entering Type I. In this way, we can understand what he wants to accomplish, which is to achieve low-cost and large-scale orbit insertion through Starship, push humanity towards Type I, and pave the way for Type II. He is not simply seeking to earn huge wealth and fame, but also thinking about how to improve the level of energy utilization in civilization. Especially SpaceX's' Space Computing 'program: The function of Starship: After being fully reusable, the cost of entering orbit is close to the cost of propellant, to achieve annual launch of million ton payloads. Support large-scale deployment of satellites, lunar factories, etc. Space AI Data Center/Computing Satellite: Plans to deploy up to one million AI satellites, utilizing infinite solar energy (without atmospheric attenuation) and vacuum cooling in space. Cheaper and more scalable than building data centers on the ground. It is expected that within 2-3 years, space will become the most economical place for AI computing power. Starlink iteration: The new generation of Starlink provides communication and serves as the interconnection backbone (laser link) for AI satellites, supporting orbital distributed supercomputers. • Chip and Manufacturing: Build a self built super factory (TeraFab level) to solve the bottleneck of global chip production capacity. Integrating humanoid robots to achieve a closed-loop space/lunar manufacturing. • A grander vision: using lunar mass drivers and other technologies to send AI hardware into deep space on a large scale, truly beginning to harness the energy of the solar system. Ultimately serving Mars colonization and multi planetary civilizations. Not only to 'beat competitors and earn more money', but also to promote energy computing manufacturing expansion as a whole system. The bottleneck of Earth's electricity and heat dissipation is too obvious, and space is a natural solution that directly serves long-term survival goals. Of course, there is no doubt that this is also part of Space X's largest IPO campaign in history. Musk is upgrading its narrative: upgrading it from a simple "rocket+satellite Internet" to a "space computing empire", using space unlimited solar energy, no cooling restrictions, Starlink laser interconnection, and low-cost launch of Starship to solve the earth's power bottleneck, thus allowing AI computing power to expand exponentially, thus changing its valuation logic: SpaceX is not only a space company, but also a new generation of AI infrastructure players. Such a grand business narrative is unprecedented, but even so, it does not mean that his vision is fake.
