[Iran Demands Sovereignty Over the Strait of Hormuz]
Odaily Planet Daily News: Iranian state media reported that, as the latest response to the U.S. proposal to end the war, Iran has demanded sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is located between Iran and Oman, where the exclusive economic zones of the two countries intersect. The narrowness of this waterway makes it easier for Iran to launch attacks on ships, as vessels lack sufficient space for maneuvering and adequate time to issue alerts to evade threats.
According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a country has 'sovereign rights' to explore, develop, conserve, and manage marine resources within its exclusive economic zone. However, 'all ships, whether from coastal or landlocked countries, enjoy the right of innocent passage through territorial seas.' The convention states that coastal nations should not 'impede the normal passage of foreign ships through their territorial seas,' except under specific and clearly defined circumstances. Coastal nations may take necessary measures within their territorial seas to prevent unjustified passage. (Jin10)
