Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama has signed the DUNA (Decentralized Unincorporated Nonprofit Association) bill, making Alabama the second U.S. jurisdiction after Wyoming to grant legal status to DAOs. The bill stipulates that eligible DAOs must have at least 100 members and be established for a nonprofit common purpose. Governance, proposals, and voting mechanisms can be conducted and recorded on-chain via blockchain and smart contracts. Once recognized, DAOs gain full legal entity status, allowing them to own property, enter into contracts, and be sued, while also providing limited liability protection for members and managers.
