The couple was forced to transfer approximately €900,000 (around $1 million) in Bitcoin before being tied up and injured. The perpetrators then fled in a white van. The case has been handed over to the anti-gang unit by the Versailles prosecutor's office, with no arrests reported so far. This incident is the latest example of a "wrench attack" in the cryptocurrency space, where violence or threats are used to force holders to surrender their digital assets. According to cybersecurity platform CertiK, such attacks globally increased by 75% to 72 cases in 2025, with France leading the world with 19 cases. This year, France has already seen multiple incidents of kidnappings and home robberies targeting cryptocurrency professionals.
