[OpenAI Plans to Halt Expansion Collaboration with Oracle's Texas Data Center, Shifting Focus to NVIDIA's Next-Generation Chips]
According to CNBC, OpenAI has abandoned plans to expand the Stargate data center in Abilene, Texas, in collaboration with Oracle and is instead seeking to deploy next-generation NVIDIA GPU clusters. The report indicates that the current Abilene project plans to use NVIDIA Blackwell chips, which are expected to be powered up in about a year. However, OpenAI hopes to utilize more powerful next-generation chips at other locations by then. Oracle is currently relying primarily on debt to fund its AI infrastructure expansion, with over $100 billion in debt on its books and negative free cash flow. Its partner, Blue Owl, has also refused to fund additional facilities. Analysts suggest that the rapid pace of GPU updates compared to data center construction cycles may result in infrastructure being outdated by the time it becomes operational.
