The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland has announced a superseding indictment against cryptocurrency promoter Rodney Burton, known online as 'Bitcoin Rodney,' for allegedly promoting the $1.8 billion HyperFund crypto scheme. Burton faces 11 federal charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, seven counts of money laundering, and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison. Burton promoted the scheme from June 2020 to May 2024, using the funds to purchase luxury homes and yachts. Co-defendant Brenda Chunga has pleaded guilty, while co-founder Sam Lee remains at large.
