The reason it stands on equal footing with OpenAI and Anthropic, aside from the industry influence of co-founder Jack Dorsey, lies in the strength of their open-source codebase, goose. As a locally-run general AI Agent engine, goose enables AI to truly possess autonomous perception and execution capabilities in local environments by integrating the file system, terminal command line, and MCP protocol. The name pays homage to the movie *Top Gun*, where Tom Cruise’s pilot character has a crucial backseat partner with the call sign 'Goose.' Goose is responsible for radar monitoring, communication coordination, and tactical support. Block clearly hopes it will become the most practical co-pilot on developers’ computers.
