It would be morally unacceptable for any government resources meant for hurricane relief or recovery to be used for personal gain. If that were ever to happen, I will ensure it is addressed immediately. This government has a strong track record of accountability. During previous hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic, when we implemented the largest social protection programme in Jamaica’s history, there was no question of misappropriation of funds. The international community recognizes this, and our systems are trusted for their transparency, integrity, and efficiency. We will manage the recovery from Hurricane Melissa with the highest standards of accountability, ensuring every dollar mobilized is used effectively to rebuild Jamaica. Those spreading falsehoods are misleading the public and undermining Jamaica’s recovery efforts.(Andrew Holness)
