The stablecoin market just faced a major stress test as multiple stable assets suffered severe depegging, exposing some structural problem across three layers of current DeFi landscape:
1️⃣ Synthetic stablecoin mechanisms
2️⃣ Curator-model lending protocols
3️⃣ Systemic risk via recursive lending
1. Synthetic stablecoin mechanisms
Synthetic “stablecoins” aren’t true stablecoins. They maintain their peg by pairing spot longs (e.g. stETH) with futures shorts, effectively a hedged trading strategy dressed up as a stablecoin.
Because their hedges sit on centralized exchanges, these systems are CeDeFi hybrids, introducing off-chain counterparty risk.
In October’s market crash, a wave of automatic deleveraging (ADL) across perps broke many delta-neutral strategies. Ethena, the largest, avoided losses thanks to bespoke agreements that insulated its exposure, others weren’t so fortunate.
2. Curator-model lending protocols
Lending Protocols like Morpho and Euler popularized the curator model in 2024–2025 to solve DeFi’s liquidity fragmentation. Instead of open pools, “curators”, specialized entities manage vaults, allocate assets, and optimize yields.
The design was meant to segregate risk, each vault operating independently, insulating lenders from failures elsewhere. But in practice, curators increasingly pursued similar yield strategies with delta-neutral stablecoin involved, diversification vanished.
One stablecoin’s failure now spreads across vaults like contagion. What was meant to isolate risk instead re-linked it through shared exposure.
3. Systemic risk & recursive lending
Recursive lending, or “looping”, occurs when borrowed assets are immediately re-lent as collateral, multiplying leverage.
Stream and Elixir used this to mint each other’s tokens (xUSD ↔ deUSD), inflating TVL and creating a circular collateral loop. Lending protocols including Morpho and Euler accepted xUSD as collateral, allowing this web of recursive debt to spread throughout DeFi.(BloFin Research)
