Lombard's acquisition of BTC.b marks the end of the era where various blockchains issued their own wrapped BTC. BTC.b is a type of wrapped BTC launched by Avalanche officially on its mainnet in 2021, one year after its debut. Back then, various blockchains started issuing their own wrapped BTC to attract TVL and participate in the DeFi ecosystem. BTC.b indeed lived up to expectations, becoming the cornerstone of Avalanche's DeFi ecosystem, and currently still holds $550 million. Although it successfully fulfilled its historical mission of cold-starting TVL, maintaining its infrastructure comes with significant costs, along with the need to ensure the security of the cross-chain bridge, which is like a ticking time bomb. As a result, Avalanche decided to "outsource" this matter to a professional team. After taking over BTC.b, Lombard will rebuild the entire framework, enhancing overall security and transparency, and will also expand BTC.b from Avalanche to other blockchains.
