American homes are older than ever: The average house purchased in the US last year hit a record age of 36 years. By comparison, in 2012, the average home age was 27 years. The typical home bought in Buffalo, NY, last year was 69 years old, the oldest among the 100 most populous metros. This comes as the supply of homes has rapidly declined over the last 15 years. Only 9% of all US homes were built in the 2010s, the lowest share of any decade since the 1940s. America’s housing stock is aging.
