[Analysis: Memory Chip Orders Far Exceed Supply Capacity in 2027-2028; Democratic Policy Impact Unlikely to Change Supply and Demand Landscape]
BlockBeats reports on November 5th that South Korean securities firm Meritz Securities pointed out that memory chip manufacturers are currently receiving far more orders than they can handle for 2027-2028. Even if the Democratic Party gains an advantage in the US midterm elections, leading to delays or adjustments to some data center projects, it is unlikely to fundamentally change the memory chip supply shortage.
Meritz stated that this year, the memory chip order fulfillment rate (the ratio of available capacity to order volume) has remained at a low level of 80% to 85%, driving a significant increase in memory chip prices. The supply-demand gap is expected to widen further in 2027, with the order fulfillment rate potentially dropping to around 80%.
Furthermore, during his recent visit to South Korea, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman requested customized storage products, including HBM (Hybrid Memory) storage, from SK Hynix to Samsung Electronics for 2027 to 2030. This demand even exceeded the two companies' available capacity.
In response, community user Teng Yan added that Samsung stated in a conference call with Meritz on October 29th that 10 large customers had already signed multi-year storage supply agreements, and an equal number of other customers were in negotiations. The customer base for storage has also expanded from cloud service giants and AI server manufacturers to many other sectors. Therefore, the slowdown in US data center approvals will only affect some orders and is unlikely to change the overall tight supply and demand situation. [Original Link]
