Binance experienced three pauses overnight:
1/ Exchange: While no evidence of private key leakage was found, funds still left. Initial investigations pointed to a compromised engineer's computer and a service container, with further breakthroughs later discovered. Withdrawals were suspended, with the official expectation of resumption in approximately 45 hours.
2/ Issuers: Tether froze over 1.567 billion USDT, and Circle froze over 800 million USDC.
3/ Protocol: @aave guardian multisigned and froze 292 reserves, but repayments and withdrawals are still possible.
However, about 40 minutes before Aave froze the market, the attacker's linked wallet deposited 60 million USDT into Aave and borrowed 19,762 WETH. This portion of USDT was held by the Aave pool contract, inaccessible to the attacker's address.
@protocol_fx: No individual can arbitrarily transfer your funds; core upgrades use time locks. I checked the fxUSD mainnet contract: According to the current code, the token layer doesn't have an address blacklist or a protocol-level emergency pause mechanism. Currently, contract upgrades are not yet enabled and require a 3-day time lock.
FX officials also provided a figure: approximately $1.54 billion was liquidated across the entire market in the past 24 hours, but zero on f(x).
@FX100Perp's design is non-custodial; margin follows the position, and each new position has 15 minutes of liquidation protection. It's currently on the testnet; the contract and audit will be released before the mainnet launch.
Every asset has a pause button. The real questions are: who can press it, where can they press it to, and can you see it beforehand? @binance
